5Great Laptop
By ATR-DRIFTS
The laptop is great. It's made of aluminum and magnesium alloy which does not attract fingerprints. However, oils from the finger/hands are slightly noticeable. The frame surrounding the screen is a dust magnet so you would have to clean it often. The laptop is very light. Battery life is great. I got anywhere from 7-8 hours in quiet office mode with approximately 40% brightness doing basic things such as web browsing, Microsoft office, pdf, etc. simultaneously. The display is great and very bright hence why I lowered it to 40%. Like most other laptops out there, the speakers are not the greatest but it is good enough in my opinion. It is relatively loud in sound but the quality of the sound is not the greatest. Start up time is good to decent thought it would be faster with a SSD. The hard drive is split into two drives (C & D). The power saving physical button on the top left gives easy access to different power saving modes which is great.Amazon has some of the incorrect spec. The sticker states it's a GeForce 610 1g and not 2g. It's a 2.8ghz 2640M i7 dual core and not 2820QM or 2620M. Laptop gets a little warm on the bottom even in quiet office mode so it's not the best to use it on your lap for an extended period of time. When pushing the laptop to high performance, the area above the keyboard where the battery is gets warm. The palm rest pad for the right hand side gets a little warm in quiet office mode and noticeably warm in high performance. Another downside is that sometimes it's easy to activate the shortcut options when using the touchpad (i.e. scrolling function).Overall this is a very good laptop. It looks nice. I've had it for a week so far and have no problems with it. It is very light to carry around especially since I commute to college with lots of other heavy things such as lunch, books, etc. Highly recommend this for those who do not want to pay for a macbook air or ultrabook and sacrifice performance in doing so while maintaining the thin and light weight requirement. If a back-lit keyboard is one of your priorities then this is not the laptop is not for you. No laptops are made perfect. The cons that I mentioned above, however, are not really a concern for me which is why I gave this a five star rating. In the future I'd probably upgrade this to 8gb of ram and with a SSD but even now I am very pleased with this laptop so far.

4Add a Seagate Momentus XT 750 and it's an ultrabook
By Edward
I bought this laptop specifically to run Linux and it does a good job of it so far.The upsides -- fast processor and decent NVIDIA GPU, compact size and great battery life. The downsides -- keyboard is not backlit and the stock hard drive is horribly slow. If you have the technical wherewithal, replace it with a Seagate Momentus XT 750 ($130) and you will be much happier. There are YouTube videos showing how to upgrade the U36SD and the U36SG is basically the same. It is a pain but well worth it.[...]Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 32 MB Cache 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ST750LX003For those with an eye for detail here is what 'lspci' and 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' have to say:eherr@singularity:~$ lspci00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09)00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Processor Family PCI Express Root Port (rev 09)00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05)00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5)00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev b5)00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 4 (rev b5)00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 6 (rev b5)00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05)00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM65 Express Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05)00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05)00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05)01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce 610M] (rev ff)03:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. 4Solid performer
By Brittany
I was in the market for a 13-inch, median price laptop with good battery life, excellent keyboard, sturdy build, and under 4lbs. Features less important for me were display resolution and touch pad performance - with a 13-inch display, the difference between the standard res for that size (1366x768) and higher res displays (eg, 1600x900) isn't really noticeable; as for the touch pad, I can live with basic functionality when mobile, and use a mouse when home. After doing extensive research, I narrowed my choices down to the HP Folio 13 and the Asus U36SG-51. While I liked the build on the HP slightly more, ultimately the Asus won me over due to its brighter display, faster graphics and much quieter keyboard and fan. While it could be improved upon (for example, use a SSD, throw in a backlit keyboard, and shave off a half pound in weight or so), I'm very happy with this laptop given its price, specs, overall build quality and performance. Highly recommend it.
