Primo little package

OK, it's true, people who are new to computers are what every vendor is only too happy to sell whatever to. You gotta do the homework. But the ones who complain about how a vendor won't take a system back with just a few insignificant chihuahua bites on it are the same ones who complain when they get a system that has been repackaged after being "ripped to shreds by some vicious beast". But back to the Sony. There are fundamentally 4 types of portables these days: desktop replacements (DR), notebooks, tablets and phones. The DRs are 17" machines that are perfect if you need a real computer with you that "only" weighs like 10 lbs. The phones and tablets are pretty self-evident. The Notebook genre are what we're dealing with here. They're streamlined computers with 13-15" screens, no hot hardware graphics support and light weight, around 5 lbs. These days you can get those down to the four hundred dollar range. But things get pretty minimal at that price.The Sony is IMHO a very reasonable compromise in that it's got some serious chops for a notebook. It's not one of the $2K+ micro-Ferraris, that sport a 14" screen but a uranium case and all the goodies you can imagine. The i5 is an appropriately fast CPU w/ 2 cores (4 threads) running up to 3 Ghz, an appropriate 640 GB drive, 4 USB2 ports, an "8 hour" battery and a CD/DVD burner. The 4GB RAM is of course too little, and they should have used a single 4GB stick to make it cheaper to upgrade to the more appropriate 6-8GB (on a 64 bit OS, especially with shared RAM video). The extras are nice. Decent Camera, HDMI out, SD etc card slots, gigabit ethernet, WiFi. The "goodies" you might miss if you want a serious DR aren't there: Accelerated graphics, USB3, Bluetooth, Blu-Ray, Firewire, expansion card slot. And so? The trade-off is you can carry this with you everywhere, it's thin and light, it's a fast processor, and it runs for many hours on a charge (not 8, come on, unless you're into watching the screen-saver or nodding out and typing with your forehead in Notepad).I got ours on sale for like five fifty, and added forty bucks in RAM and twenty for a mouse. Would have gotten the white, but it was over a hundred more. It's sort of a Macbook for the rest of us in that it's well-made, not ugly, it has everything we need, not too expensive, and it's very very handy. The keyboard and trackpad are not luxurious, but fine. The fourteen inch 1366x768 screen is nice, the image/color is clean, it plays back 720p HD native, and 1080 just fine. Again, you are not getting accelerated gamer graphics, or a 1080p native screen. You just have to decide if you need a Notebook or a DR. I have an older HP 17" DR that almost killed several stewardesses coming out of the overheads, and I swore the next laptop was not going to be a back-breaker. The one shortcoming on the Sony that's hard to understand is the really low volume on the speakers - I haven't found a way yet to boost it, say by tweaking the EQ. That irritating detail and the "toss 2 sticks" RAM upgrade path cost it a star. And don't pay list! Other than that it's a primo little Notebook.

Great Laptop !

I got the Sony VAIO EG2 14 inch (Blush Pink) Laptop for my wife to start College. She Loves it, Not only the fast programs but the whole computers set up. Also its cool looking design and she just loves the color. This Laptop for the price is outstanding and to me performs just as fast if not better then a MAC. Also, my wife has no problems with any programs... like her friends do with there MAC's not wanting to perform with programs not made by MAC. I almost went all out and bought the Name.. I'm so happy I did not... This Computer is great and does everything she needs!

Awesome Laptop / Great Value

After replacing my 8 year old Dell Laptop, I looked into this Vaio upon the recommendation of a few friends. I'm not a tech-guy by any stretch, just wanted a solid everyday home laptop with good memory for interent, Itunes, Quickbooks, Skype and some word processing (no gaming) and this laptop absolutely fit the bill! Solid construction, unique and appealing design (case texture is great, shows no fingerprints), comfortable, wide and spacious keyboard, lightning fast-start up and downloads, user-freindly, gorgeous Hi-Def screen, great for watching videos and DVD's, fast CD and DVD burner and an awesome camera for Skyping with friends and family. For the price (just a shy over $600) and complete with Windows 7, you can't beat it! Battery life is fine too. Unlike some complaints, mine gets just under 3 hours which suits my needs and also charges very fast. I've had freinds that have owned Vaio's years with little to no problems, and now glad to own one myself. If you're looking for a rock solid laptop with style and function, get this one. I'm happy I made this purchase, would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

Great value for the price

This is my third Vaio laptop, and while this brand is pricier than its competition, I'm very happy with this computer (and its older sibs, both of which still work).Physically, this isn't a tiny netbook. At 6 pounds, it's not something I'm going to be schlepping on airplanes, but that isn't what I bought it for. As always, the Vaio screen is lovely and bright, and widescreen. The ports seem to be well-placed. And the aesthetics are quite nice -- it's a brushed, fingerprint-resistant silver. It's really quite fast (no choking or hard drive whirring while loading programs, etc.) and it's extremely quiet. They keyboard took a little while to adapt to, but it's nice and roomy, with space between the keys. The touchpad works well, and the DVD drive is also smooth and quiet. The HDMI port works as it should with my LCD tv.I haven't tested battery life as I don't plan to use this as an on-the-go machine.I didn't know much of what to expect from Windows 7, and while this isn't a Windows 7 review, it works smoothly on this machine. Most of my Windows XP software works, with a few exceptions.As usual, Sony packs in way too much preinstalled crap on their laptops, and I really wish they wouldn't, but I guess that's the price of buying a machine like this. I do wish they'd include a disc to let you install this stuff, rather than requiring that you uninstall it. Surprisingly though, Google Chrome is one of the preinstalled programs, so it is good to have a decent browser right out of the box. One thing Sony doesn't include much of at all is written documentation. Other than a tiny Getting Started booklet, all the documentation is on the machine itself.Overall, I'm pleased with this computer so far. For the price, you are getting a near-desktop replacement that happens to be a laptop.

Relieved at a great computer

The best thing about this laptop is that it "feels like a good computer." Nowadays the guts of a computer are standard enough, so it is the aesthetics now that differentiate.The body is "textured", so fingerprints and smudges don't show up; it still looks like new. There is no "ten key" keypad on the keyboard, which means that the keys are spaced with just a bit more room to make typing more comfortable. The keys themselves have a solid feel, and no rattle or wiggle. The touchpad is also texturized, not too glassy.The screen is bright and crisp, a joy for watching movies. The "one touch web access without booting up" feature is nice, so it can act like my iphone I suppose -- easy to quickly check email without having to power it all up.I've used it while plugged in and on battery power, and it stays cool enough to rest on my bare legs.The extra junk software about which others complain -- just wipe out and reinstall the operating system before using it; the free stuff won't re-appear.PROS:Textured body, solid keyboard, crisp screen. Good overall tactile "feel."CONS:A bit heavier than others.Overall, its a good product. It is my second VAIO, my work laptop is a Dell, and I've had WINBOOK and HP in the past too. So far, SONY appears to consistenly make a good product that stands up to wear and tear. I would recommend this laptop to friends!!

5 stars for solid value

I bought this computer on sale at a different retailer (well under four hundred), but it's still well worth the current listed price here. At the time I bought it, I thought it had a faster processor (was looking at the wrong specs), so when I got the actual computer I was dismayed to see 1.6 GHz on the box. Thought about taking it back, but, it was just such a good deal, and I was in a situation where I needed a computer immediately. Another disappointment was its lack of a webcam, in the picture it looks like it has one, but it's just the place where one would have been.It might seem odd to start out a 5 star review with disappointments, but this was an emergency purchase and wasn't my first choice, it was just the best thing I could afford. However (and it's a big however), this little computer rocks very, very hard. It totally exceeded my expectations, and there aren't too many things that do that.The Good:* It's surprisingly fast - faster than the T7200 2GHz 64bit dual core laptop it replaced. Significantly faster.* It has enough memory for most folks (unless you're like me, the mad multi-tasker, in which case, go ahead and increase it to 4GB -- it will run all sorts of apps (dreamweaver, photoshop elements, several browsers, local web server, etc) simultaneously when running at 60 - 80% of 3836GB available (out of the 4GB) memory without getting boggy.* The screen is bright, clear, and has decently vivid color. Watching DVDs and streaming HD video is delightful.* The keyboard is wonderful, and the trackpad is one of the first I've ever been able to use without missing a mouse. It's positioned perfectly, recessed just enough, and has software smart enough to recognize accidental touches vs. deliberate ones. The scroll area on the right side is nice and responsive.* Battery life is adequate, this isn't a Low Voltage processor so it's going to last 2-3 hours with moderate use and the screen dimmed (it reports 4 hours left when I unplug it, but I've never used it more than an hour unplugged -- someday I'll test it to see how long it'll last, and update this review then). **update** Battery life is another area this little computer exceeds expectations. Power save mode does a great job of running it efficiently and putting it to sleep when not in use, so I can bring it to work, use it when I need to check personal email or twitter or get to my files, and leave it unplugged all day, no problem. And, solid use, still over two hours.* Having the numeric keypad is such a good thing. It's a little squeezed in, so the function keys and decimal are on top instead of on the side, but it's easy enough to get used to.* Runs external monitor with no problems (but that needs to be configured in the thing called "Acer Grid" to really work right)The Hmmm...* The pattern on the lid is supposed to be fingerprint resistant, but you can still see fingerprints. (It's still very pretty, no complaints). However, whatever they used on the keyboard frame and the trackpad is some sort of miraculous substance that you cannot tell has been touched. I've had my greasy paws resting on it for hours on end for over a week now, never wiped it clean, it's just ... clean.* There was a little crapware to uninstall, nothing too annoying, but I feel the need to mention it, hopefully one day manufacturers will "get it" and stop pre-installing crap entirely? Hey, a girl can dream.* Only 2 USB ports - when I set it up at work (plugged into external monitor, with keyboard and mouse in front of the big monitor) this means I'd need a USB hub to use any other USB device. No big deal though.The Meh...* Speakers don't rock -- but -- plugged in my old altec lansing powered speakers + subwoofer (model VS2321 if you were wondering, nothing fancy, just basic laptop speakers) and the sound watching Foo Fighters live stream was freakin' awesome.* Last night I plugged my new Droid in to transfer music, and all the browsers got squirrely while it was plugged in. Every browser (I have 5 installed) crashed constantly while Android phone was connected. No big deal, just ... weird.In Conclusion:This is a good, solid, basic machine, at a great price -- (I paid more for my telephone after deposits, fees, taxes, etc :) -- and it's the only time I've been disappointed by the numbers in the specs but pleasantly surprised by the *actual performance* - usually it's the other way around. It's a pleasure to type on, the trackpad is awesome, the screen is lovely, and it strikes a nice balance in size between the huge desktop-replacements and the little ultra-portables that always feel a little cramped. And Windows 7 is an awesome OS (been using it since late beta) and the release version running on a computer built for it is *sweet*.

Good value done well

This is a solid budget priced entry from Acer. This 1.6gz AMD "Vision", Athlon based system won't win any speed test races but it is a surprisingly snappy performer for common office tasks and internet usage. I recommend this PC for those looking for a solid, entry level computer or as a secondary PC for convenience use (i.e. a portable to supplement a desktop). It is not a good choice for strenous tasks like heavy Photoshop usage, multimedia encoding, or gaming.PLUSES:- Cost. At full price its a great value, but I have also seen it on sale at various stores including Amazon.com for under 400. That is phenomenal for the level of components you receive.- 64bit Windows 7 Premium with 3GB of RAM helps keep things quick and responsive. If you buy it elsewhere do check the amount of RAM though. There are apparently slight variations of this model depending on retailer and some have 2gb instead of 3.- A bright, clear screen with HD resolution for a very nice movie viewing experience.- Seperate numberpad area is rarely found on laptops of this size.- Adequate hard drive space. You should get a good external drive if you want to bring a huge library of movies or music along with you. Suggestion: Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905003FGA2E1-RK (Silver)MINUSES:- Battery life is unimpressive. Depending on what you are doing with it you can probably get more than the listed rating but if you need long battery operation time look for a different model.- No webcam.- Only 2 USB ports.- Keys are a tad smaller than I'm used to even for a laptop (probably due to squeezing in the otherwise welcome numberpad).- Not anywhere near as glutted as some of the bigger name brands out there but Acer still jams some trailware bloat onto it.SPECIAL NOTE:Processor is actually a 1.6 GHz AMD TK-42, not the older 1.2gz L310 shown on the description. I have seen this exact same discrepancy on many websites. I would guess that Acer changed their mind at the last second and shipped the better processor but failed to update the boilerplate text retailers cut and paste onto their listings. Bottom line is what you get is an upgrade over what is listed!

The package came well protected. The laptop was a great value for the money. Still trying to figure out all the bells and whistles. It does get warm after a while so needs to be on safe surface. I love the postage note option! :)

Great Notebook

I have had the U260 for a few weeks now and have nothing but good things to say about it. The fit and finish is excellent. The keyboard is one of the best notebook keyboards I have ever typed on. I use this notebook for work often and a good keyboard is frankly hard to come by in the notebook world. Also, the low weight is a huge plus for dragging this machine to and from the office. The performance is great for my purposes. I don't game, but I do use Netflix streaming and occasionally run memory intensive programs for work purposes. The U260 handles these tasks with ease. The notebook runs much cooler than previous laptops I have owned with no noticeable fan noise. I had originally purchased an HP dm3 directly from HP. I returned the dm3 as it came brand new out of the box with a screen bezel that had separated from the screen back. Upon return, HP sent a new dm3. The right touch pad button of the replacement ceased to function after only 2 days of use. I ended up getting a refund and upon further searching found the U260. I can't begin to describe how much better the U260 is than the dm3.

Horrible customer service

Less than 5 months after receiving this computer I had issues with the lcd display. I sent the computer to Lenovo for repair. Everything was covered under the warranty and they guaranteed me a 6 day turn around time after they receved the machine. However, due to a parts shortage the wait was more like 8 weeks. Once it was sent backed to me I immediatly noticed severally flaws on the machine that were not there prior to sending it for repair. There were dead pixels throughout the display. The casing on the side of the screen was loose, and the computer would autimatically restart every time I booted it up. I called Lenovo, and as of now i am waiting for a call from their management for a full refund.

Not Impressed

This review is not so much for the consumer, as I doubt anyone is still looking to purchase this over-rated, over-priced item. I would just like the manufacturer to know how I feel about being stuck with their product and Lenovo's website doesn't offer a persistent review feature.Yeah, the laptop looks good on the outside. Looks aside, I'm disappointed in it after having it for less than two years.To beat a dead horse, the battery life is essentially non-existent... maybe enough for you to unplug the laptop and go to the library and locate an open socket.Also, the keyboard trim--as also previously noted--has started to (and/or possibly has been) warp.So, yeah, it's great getting compliments for a nice-looking laptop; but it doesn't function up to par and I fear it is starting to materially degrade. Maybe I'll leave it on my desk as an ornament as I complete my work with a more functional laptop.

My experience so far

I am writing this review after a short use as there are not much relevant reviews available. In fact this particular model is not even on Sony's official website. I got it through my Company after an epic fail of Acer laptop within a month.Here the few quick points to add-1. This laptop is heavy.. seriously, It is not something to carry on roads or starbucks instead it is good for Home/office use.2. It has extra numbered keyboard. so if you are used to regular keyboard then you might press wrong keys at times..3.High performance- 6gb RAM/iCore 5.. I called sony representative and he told me number in the model tells performance. Higher the number..better the performance... so this machine is highest performer in e series for sony as it is 37.4. Speakers volume is good for entertainment purpose.I am generally happy with Sony products. Hope this one will last.. i am really scared to see failure of Acer for no reason. I will add more points based on my experience.

A GREAT VALUE!

This computer is an outstanding value! You can get the same computer from Sony at a similar price, HOWEVER, here you will not spend the additional costs in sales tax, not to mention the FREE shipping (can vary if different seller than Data Vision)! With 6 gigs of memory, over 600 gigs of hard disk space and an i5 processor you won't beat this deal ANYWHERE, at least not in a higher end model laptop like this one. I really recommend the Sony Vaio wireless mouse in white to go with this, it's a very nice item as well!

Surprised and Extremely Happy

After buying another HP to replace a defunct one and having it arrive with multiple software and hardware issues out of the box (it was returned after three days,) I decided to take another look at the Sony machines. This Vaio caught my eye and, after diligent research, I made the purchase.I should have bought this machine first.From a sheer looks point-of-view, it's a beautiful piece of machinery. When you turn it on, the functions and internal workings match that external view.Without going into useless nuts & bolts, let me just say that I couldn't be happier with this laptop after a week's worth of putting it through as many paces as I could.Five stars aren't enough, really.

Asus 17.3" Laptop

This is a great laptop. It has all the features I need, plus more. High quality picture and sound. It is a large laptop, so it's heavy to carry but, I wanted the bigger laptop for home use. I can recommend this, unless your planning on taking a laptop on the go. You would be better off with a smaller, lighter weight one. Have only had this for a few weeks and it's become my "go to" computer. It doesn't have the battery life that some do. That is the only downfall, but it doesn't affect my usage, because it is used in same spot most times and can be plugged in.

Worth more than you pay for.

I'm using this computer to write the review. I'm not much of a technophile, but I've owned several laptops of varying makes, models, and abilities, and I can say right now just from using this one for the last hour, it's one of the best I've ever owned.I'll give you the cons first:It's HUGE. If you plan on buying a computer that you can take places with you, this is probably not the best choice for you. This behemoth will be far more compatible with your desk than your backpack. Also, and this is just because I'm used to smaller laptops and therefor smaller keyboards, the keyboard on this thing, while sturdy and easy to use, is a little wider than the average computer and you need to reach for a few keys. You can get used to that very quickly, though. It's not a chiclet style, which I prefer, but it feels solid underneath my fingers. Also, the usb port on the right side seems a little tight. It was pretty difficult getting the receiver for my wireless mouse in. If you use the usb very often it could prove to be a problem down the line.Pros:Sturdy Keyboard. Clear, not-glossy screen. Nice speaker,from what I've heard so far. And it's POWERFUL. The specs on this thing look good on paper, look great in action. I'm coming off of an i3 processor and I can see a clear difference. I went through the usual routine of uninstalling and installing my regular programs, and I managed to go through it in about half the time it normally takes. I'm really looking forward to putting the graphics card to work. I bought this used, but Amazon, as always, delivers in spades. They said it was like new, and I couldn't tell if it had ever actually been used, except for a slight smudge on the mousepad, and the blank screen offering to do a factory restore when I booted up. On top of that, since it's used {I'm guessing} there was absolutely NO bloatware.All in all, I'm extremely pleased and excited with my new gamer laptop. I'll post a new update in a few months, 'cause one of the things I want when looking through reviews is how the laptops hold up over time. I'll let you know. For now, though, I would recommend this laptop without a second thought. Even at market price it's worth every penny.

Well I bought two of these and all I can say is that I am considering a third. the construction of the unit is good, all materials feel solid and well made. here are the pros and cons:Pros:battery life is good approximately 6.5 - 8.5 hours when surfing with wi-fi and brightness set to lowest and power saver mode is oni3 processor is surprisingly robust especially when placed on high performance mode15.6" HD screen is awesome in low light situations but have not tried HDMI output as yet4 usb ports always a pluswindows 7 is the best4 gigs of ram is perfect for the machinelaptop is thinner than all others i have seen at this price pointit stays really coolwebcam and mic are good quality especially for skypewi-fi connects easily and signal never drops ( using an N router and it configures in seconds)games play really well especially when you consider that it has integrated Intel HD graphics and not a discrete cardcons:not as light as i initially thoughtbattery life is nowhere close to 8 hrs when not in power saver modescreen is hard to see in direct sunlighthard drive may be too small 320gig for some especially for a $700.00+ laptopaluminum lid gets smudges on it which are really hard to get rid ofcrapware galoreAlthough there are minor problems with various elements you must consider that this machine is an extended battery life laptop without a ULV processor and not a mainstream laptop. so i would recommend this laptop to anyone who is considering it as it is a buy buy buy any day.

Wow I'm impressed

I had been using a netbook and liked the size and battery life it provided...however, I'm in my 70's and dealing with the small font, not to mention the slow speed of the netbook, I was growing tired of the netbook in general. When I read the reviews on this laptop I ordered one right off the bat. Most impressed with the battery life (I would guess I get about 6 1/2 hours and the speed is off the map by comparison top the netbook. Granted it's much bigger but does only weigh a bit over 5 pounds...terrific computer. Lightening fast!!I have had 3 variations of Acer Computers and good luck with all of them.

Awesome!

I decided to get a new laptop because my previous laptop was starting to show its age. My old laptop was an Acer and it was still very reliable overall so I decided to go with another Acer computer and I wasn't disappointed. Acer has a good reputation with me for fast, reliable computers.The appearance is very sleek and stylish. It's ultra thin and lightweight. However it does have a wide screen resolution which may take a little while to get used to if you haven't had a computer with that kind of resolution before. (Like me) Because of the wider screen, the keyboard is wider as well which gives it room for a number pad. The rest of the keyboard and the mouse pad are off center as a result but after a day or two I was used to it.The battery life is not an exaggeration either and even when I've had the computer turned on and plugged in for hours it still runs cool.Other than that the computer runs super fast and the graphics are great! :D
