Very Good Laptop at a Very Good Price

I got this laptop on a Gold Box Deal of the day. It was a gift for my wife. It has met and exceeded our expectations. It arrived in pristine condition. I would highly recommend this laptop to others looking for a middle of the road, all-around good performing laptop.Here are the reasons we are happy with the Samsung. The battery life is about 5 hours, even watching videos on Hulu and Netflix the entire time on maximum power consumption. It's more like 7 hours when put on the lowest setting.The keyboard spacing is good and typing is easy and your fingers almost 'glide' between key strokes. The screen is beautiful when turned on to full-power. It is truly a good HD experience and video playback is more than sufficient. Overall performance of the machine is perfect for what my wife uses it for; simple internet tasks, small bits of PDF formatting, word processing, research, and other basic everyday things. There are plenty of USB ports (3.0 ports included which are nice for larger files and photo uploading).The only flaw is that the keyboard being back-lit would have been a plus, but not at all necessary for her/us. It says the keyboard is back-lit on the product's page, but it isn't. Again, not really a deal breaker at all. Some parts of the laptop have cool looking LED's to it and that's nice, but still not necessary for our satisfaction.We have had the laptop for almost two months and this has been our experience. I have personally had two Toshiba laptops in the past 5 years, and my wife's Samsung surpasses both of them in quality I do believe. Albeit I have had more time to scrutinize the Toshibas. All-in-all, I would consider the Samsung first in my future purchases.

Overall good product

Purchased this laptop a couple of weeks ago. After reinstalling Windows to remove the bloatware, it has been running fantastic.There is no backlit keyboard but that is not a deal breaker for me.I selectively installed some of the Samsung software. Easy Settings can sometimes take a while to open and does not always keep my settings on reboot. This can be fixed by manually changing the settings in Windows. An example of this is when I shut all wireless functions off, it will not retain that setting on reboot. You will have to disable through Windows if you want that functionally off persistently.Easy Settings can be nice though as it will allow access to certain features of the laptop that otherwise might be more difficult to change. An example of this is the Battery Life Extender. You can turn it on or off through Easy Settings or through the BIOS setting. (Not difficult to change, but convenient so you don't have to reboot.)The computer itself runs very well overall and feels like a pretty solid device.Be aware that the NVIDIA Optimus requires drivers from Samsung to function correctly. The standard NVIDIA drivers won't install.

Touch Pad Buttons Stopped Working

Bought this laptop because it seemed to have everything I wanted for the price I wanted. Got it out of the box and was loving it. However, after putting it away for a couple hours and waking it back up I found I had no use of my mouse buttons - making it impossible for me to do anything on the laptop.What I discovered after one too many long conversations with Samsung that this is a recurring problem with this model that they blame on Windows update for disrupting the driver. Their fix - reset the computer.I was glad this problem showed itself the day I opened the computer rather than a month or two in. Returned it to Amazon and got my full refund.My advice - don't buy a computer that the company can't get a key piece like the mouse to work.

Just What I Wanted.

Wow. Where to begin? First, this computer is the perfect size for mobility. It's thin, fairly light (not super light, but lighter than most laptops) and sleek. The screen is really really bright. The backlit keyboard is perfect for me since I work night shifts from home on the computer, and the keys are perfectly spaced. The battery is as good as advertised. Fully charged, I get a full 8 hours of constant use out of it. That's having several different web pages open, doing downloads, and listening to music. The processor is plenty good if you're not playing high-end games, and the 6GB of Ram enables me to keep lots of things open but not have anything glitchy happen. The computer has been on my lap with a blanket covering my legs for the last 8 hours while I was working and when I reach under to touch the bottom, I can barely feel any heat.Other things that make this stand out: 3.0 USB ports. No matter WHAT you buy, get at least one of those. There's no comparison to how fast they upload media, images, etc. The touchpad isn't annoying like I thought it was going to be. It instant on works amazingly well. It's fast to load anything, and even runs the internet more quickly than my old laptop. Plus, it's ACER so you know the parts are high quality. The price is outstanding for an Ultrabook as well. I did a week's worth of comparing and built a spreadsheet with what I wanted. This had it all. I was very pleased.

Happy with it

I've only had this laptop for a day now so I will update if any problems do come up. For the price (with the current $100 gift card) it was a good deal even though this is the base model. I don't play games and just wanted something for music and internet.It is heavier than it looks to be but you do get the DVD drive so it was worth that weight added. It feels sturdy and I don't notice any flexing when I pick it up on one side. The finish is not my favorite and around the screen is kind of rubberized which I guess is better than a glare from the screen (or keys). The keys do have a light underneath which is nice and it's easy to turn off.Not a huge fan of the trackpad. It has no buttons for the right/left click and usually when I am trying to left click.. it ends up as a right click. It's a huge trackpad though which is nice. I am coming from a ThinkPad so any trackpad without the trackpoint will take a while to get use to.The computer itself is very fast and capable of having multiple programs going at once. I did spend about a half hour uninstalling random trials and programs from the computer. I was downloading some programs and doing updates with the laptop on my bed and the bottom did get warm but it wasn't hot by any means. The keyboard stayed cool.--------------------10/17/2012Very happy with the laptop. Love that it really does turn on pretty much instantly if you just have the laptop closed. Boots up incredibly fast. Haven't had any issues with the wireless at all. The only thing that is slightly annoying at this point is the power button. It's not a switch but a button at the right edge of the laptop and it is easily pushed. Sitting on a couch with the laptop on your lap will eventually lead to you randomly turning the laptop off if you aren't careful.

Good Near Ultrabook

I was considering a true ultrabook from Acer for the same price. That one, the Acer Aspire S3-391-6899 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne), would have satisfied what I needed: inexpensive, basic functionality, compact, with an SSD drive for faster boot-up times. I instead got this one which is not as compact but packs a slightly larger screen with the same resolution, a DVD drive, and the same SSD drive. With a protective sleeve it fits nicely in my carry-on luggage. Also, there was no scrimping on either memory (6G) or the hard drive (500G). The i3 processor running at 1.5MHz is on the low end of performance but is sufficient for what I need. Battery time looks to be at least 5 hours but I have not formally timed it yet. The screen has a smaller viewing angle compared to my desktop but it gets better at full brightness. It's been less than two weeks so unless something happens to it later I'll give it 4 stars now.Update 1:The right button on the touchpad was a little balky. It does not respond well when pressed in the corner of the pad. You either have to press hard or move your finger closer to the center of the pad. The left button was more consistent across its operating width. It's not a huge deal since I usually attach a wireless mouse. One more USB port would have been nice.There was the usual Windows 7 and Intel stickers below the keyboard but the Intel sticker advertises a CORE i5 while the true processor is an i3. I wonder if BMW ever got this wrong with their 3XXi and 5XXi cars.

good laptop, awkward keyboard

Just got it in the mail. MSI makes reputable laptops, and this one looks like a good quality one. No too heavy for the size, with pretty blue lights in front of trackpad.My only problem with it is that they squeezed full numeric keypad in there. This comes at the expense of Enter and Right Shift keys. This should be a steal for folks who do data entry.Also please note: no HDMI output on this one.

I love the laptop and the keyboard, I think ANY keyboard without the numpad looks funky and I won't buy them. The only issue I have is it gets a little hot some times,I've had mine for 2 years and after about an hour of use I can't set it on my lap without overheating myself. I think it just needs a better fan or more ventilation ports.

Used ASUS G74SX-BBK7

This review is about the product I purchased from KMM5086 - Amazon Marketplace I bought two of these machines from Best Buy last year so I knew what to expect. The seller said it was only being sold as used because it was an open box; otherwise, it hadn't actually been used. For the price, even if it showed some wear, I would have been happy; but when it arrived, it looked exactly the way the other units did when I brought them home from Best Buy last year.Evidently, the seller must have turned it on before shipping it because Windows 7 was updated as of Oct 1, the day it shipped. I thought that was a very nice touch that saved us a lot of time.I bought this unit for my Daughter-in-law to play games like Diablo III on along with my son, who got one of the two identical units last year. After firing it up and getting the two updates recently released by Microsoft; and uninstalling a couple of things, we installed Diablo III and she was playing it when I left.I was a bit leery at first, with him being a new seller on Amazon but the description and price overrode my skepticism and I am very glad that it did. The other thing that worried me a tad was that there was no mention of where it was coming from; but once it shipped, FedEx let me know it was coming from FL. (I think he might mention the location of products he sells in the future.)I also paid for expedited shipping which said I would get the laptop in 4-6 days. It shipped Monday and arrived on Thursday. It doesn't get much better than that!I will be upgrading its memory this weekend, which will give me an opportunity to look inside the case a little bit. I do not anticipate any problems on that score. Again, everything looked brand new and pristine, as advertised.I am complete satisfied with this purchase at this time; and I would buy from this seller again without hesitation.

Not your average g74sx

This model was made explicitly for Best Buy, refurbs are out there, as are used ones.Differences vs typical rog g74sx-xxxx-2GB of VRAM instead of 3GB-128 Bit instead of 256-2D vs 3D Panel-1600x900 instead of 1920x1080 Panel-No Bluetooth-No Blu-ray-Smaller HDDs (500s instead of 750s)
