4Pretty Good Laptop
By Danni H.
This laptop arrived and then went completely lifeless after two days. Had to send it to HP for repair. HP support was easy to work with but I was without the brand new laptop for a few weeks. It ended up needing a new motherboard.. so that was unfortunate. Now that I've been using it for a while, here's the scoop. I wanted a simple windows laptop for work mainly because I don't like the way Office runs on a mac - Office and the mac appear to dislike each other. My preference is still my mac :) (Note - I ordered it in October so it came with Windows 7.)Things I like:-it's lightweight-has a backlit keyboard that's also nice to type on - having it be backlit is an extremely great feature-the black and red casing is attractive and has a smooth feel-the screen is glossy, but it still looks fine/nice-it's pretty fast (i know, it's "slower" than the newer processors, but i3 is still fast)-plenty of hard drive space-4G of RAM is better than 2G-the trackpad is just ok (allows for two finger scrolling, pinching, etc - coming from a mac, I'm glad to have this)-there are dedicated volume and screen brightness buttons on the keyboard-beats audio sound is pretty good-bluetooth is convenient for connecting to the smartphone, pairing with a bluetooth speaker, adding a mouse-battery life is above averageThings I don't like:-the fan seems to run a lot even with coolsense .. it's not "loud", but you will notice it in a quiet setting.. this is just something you have to accept with a windows laptop-of course there's bloatware - but you can remove some of itThings to know:-no DVD/CD driveIn the end, this is a good deal on a decent laptop with a hefty hard drive, 4G of RAM, backlit keyboard, lightweight, etc. I was also looking at the Vizio 14inch, but decided on this one since it had a backlit keyboard (and the Vizio had a lot of complaints about the keyboard and trackpad). If you just need a regular laptop, you'll probably be content with this model.Word to the wise - it does NOT ship in an amazon box so everyone will know you have a new HP laptop once it's delivered to you and left outside. You may want to opt for "this is a gift" at check out.

4The Good, Bad and Ugly
By IcartM
Review for HP Envy LaptopThis is my first Vine review for a higher end technology product. This machine is $749.00 so I will give it the best review I can. When I compare it to my current laptop, I'll be comparing it to a Dell Inspiron N7010 (google it if you're interested). My Dell has its issues but has served me well since December, 2010. I bought it from a shopping channel for about $949.00. It came with a lot of extra software and is a 17.3" widescreen. I currently use Windows 8, consumer edition. One nice thing was the free addition of Office 2010, Student/Teacher edition. Not the testing/preview, the FULL edition. I still scratch my head as to WHY manufacturers put the trial (another name for it) edition of Office on computers. Just charge a little more and put at least the Student/Teacher edition. That's another debate for another time.Pros: I'm including packaging, shipping, and carrier: The Whole Kit and Caboodle!* Minimal packaging creates less carbon foot printing. The getting started is about an 11x17 sheet, front and back. You take it out, plug it in, hook up to wireless and you're off. If you can't do that, email me and I'll tutor you via the `net..lol. Seriously, it's very easy.* USB 3.0...yes! I'm surprised it isn't color coded but it's there. Now I can use the portable drive I accidentally bought. (OK..you can use a 3.0 on a 2.0 port...I know technology pretty well. ' )* Keyboard....very nice (especially if you like working in the dark with the lighting of it); the feel of the keys is wonderful-comfortable, easy to press, the spacing is perfect!* Temperature-wise, it is one of the 'coolest' I've ever come across. No overheating!* The battery life is nice but NOWHERE near the 8 hours they brag about. Having been an owner of laptops for many years and of many different manufacturers, this is very common. Always decrease the amount of battery life a company boasts about. Even Apple!* It is much lighter, obviously, than my Dell. Not nearly as light as I thought it would be but a good weight for students.* As mentioned in my intro, I use a 17.3 inch laptop. I was worried about 'moving down' to a 14 inch. (I also use a Macbook pro that's 13 inches but not enough to be used to the smaller size.) It wasn't that bad. I plan on creating a class/eduators website and plan to use this laptop as the primary laptop that holds the software and files.Cons: I'm including packaging, shipping, and carrier: The Whole Kit and Caboodle here too!* Amazon did NOT package it so that the laptop wouldn't slide around. Shame on Amazon!* My laptop had been opened before. MAYBE it was because it was a Vine laptop, I don't know as I've never received a higher-end piece of technology before. I will presume that yours will be sealed by H-P.* UPS left mine by my front door, on a rainy day. No signature required. Way to go! (This surprised me. I'm surprised Amazon didn't require a signature. They might with yours.)* TRIAL version of Norton. Either give me the software for a YEAR or don't bother putting anything on there. (I'm not a big fan of Norton anyway so I vote for the latter.)* Even though the lid is NOT glossy, it still loves your body oils. ' I will be getting a skin for it very soon like I have for my Dell.* I love the keyboard...except for the backspace key. It's making a clunking sound and doesn't respond well. Maybe it's messed up on this laptop only.* It boasts sound quality and it has the right to do so. In addition it has built-in bluetooth-a feature Mac always has bragging rights to. My issue was a Vulcan bluetooth-enabled speaker. I could pair it but never could get the music to play through it without using the cable. What's the use of having a bluetooth speaker if I'm still tethered with a cable?? Nonetheless, the sound is OUTSTANDING with the two put together!* The power cable is NOT flush with the laptop-it sticks out. This gets me nervous with the possibility of it breaking. Bad thinking on HP's side of things.* The touch pad...ahhhhh, the touch pad. Tricky little sucker. I'm used to this style of touchpad but I have to say that this one doesn't fully cooperate. There are times when I click on the lower left side but the laptop doesn't respond appropriately. The same is true for the right side. The hand gestures are nice. If you're used to a mac, you'll fit right in.* There are only 3 USB ports. Because there is no optical drive, I feel it needs even more USB ports. At minimum 4, maybe 5 or 6. Yes...it would interfere with weight and size...possibly....but 3 isn't enough for this reviewer!* Though this isn't really a con because I knew it going in...I MISS HAVING A dvd/cd rom/drive! Yes, there are many items that can be downloaded. Yes, there are many items that can NOT be downloaded. It's a simple solution: purchase an external one. The good news is you control whether you get a high end (blue ray) or low end (CD burner).Overall it's a good laptop that I've pretty much used ever since I got it. I still get irritated with the touchpad and backspace key but I believe the backspace key is an issue with my laptop only and the touchpad, well, it will just take time to get used to.

5Features as listed on Amazon may not be accurate but nifty little entry level laptop (UPDATED)
By Kilgore Gagarin
UPDATE 27 NOV 2012: I've upgraded this from 4 to 5 stars after three weeks plus of use, primarily because of its "HP Imagepad" (the touchpad) which is very large and very responsive - once you get used to Windows 8 this touchpad works VERY well. I've compared this laptop to the similar HP Pavilion 14-b010us 14-Inch Laptop Sleekbook which has a different, VERY deficient Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad (smaller, less responsive). The "HP Imagepad" equipped laptops should be preferred equipment if you're going to be using Windows 8.ORIGINAL REVIEW:If you need an optical drive included in your laptop, DON'T GET THIS SPECIFIC PRODUCT (HP Envy 4-1010us Sleekbook). At this time, the specs on Amazon for this includes a "checklist" which explicitly says "Built-in-Blu Ray player" and "Built-in CD/DVD burner" which is not true. I think HP might be getting the specifications for other higher-end and pricier Ultrabook laptops in this line mixed up. On the bright side, it looked like this didn't have a backlit keyboard, but it does. Some sloppy quality control on the marketing end, but not the fault of the laptop. Do your homework on the specs before buying. The software (Windows 8, etc.)My HP Envy Sleekbook shipped with Windows 8 which I've never used before. When I ordered this the specs indicated it would ship with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit - more sloppy marketing description. I have a hard time divorcing a review of the laptop from the operating system, but that's almost impossible. My personal nature is that I hate every new interface, mostly because I've become familiar with my current one (which was new and hated at one time). So regarding Windows 8 on this machine: from what I can tell there's nothing about this laptop that is anathema to Windows 8, but the trackpad could be a problem for some. Windows 8 is obviously designed for a touch screen (e.g., tablet) and the Sleekbook does not have one. Most of the interface issues/confusion I've had have to do with using the trackpad which is physically fine - but it's been confusing and I'm working things out. As a piece of hardware it appears to be sensitive enough and does what it's supposed to do. I'm just not sure what it's supposed to do all the time and keep opening up new apps, screens, and menus by accident. Enough about Windows 8.This Sleekbook comes with lots of bloatware pre-installed which I despise, but I've found that's pretty universal for computers with pre-installed operating systems. I hate it, but I can't downgrade it (I'd rather downgrade the entire industry sometimes). I also recognize that some of that bloatware I probably would install. I just deal with it.Installation of the system does require a wireless or wired network connection. The hardware (laptop)Mine is a nice looking black top, red bottom. The brushed metal cover will immediately pick up smudges, but that's not a big deal (just want to note it). The backlit keyboard is very bright, and there is an always lit "backlit keyboard key" that's nice for toggling backlighting on and off.The screen's large and sharp and serves nicely for watching media. Speakers are better than what you'd expect for built-in laptop speakers, but they're still just that - laptop speakers. The keyboard is, um, serviceable? Keyboards are like operating systems - you have to get used to new ones. I have no real complaints at this time.My favorite feature is the "CoolSense" technology. I have no idea how they do it, but it only seems to get "slightly warm" on the bottom even after a couple of hours of use. This is the first laptop I've had that I can prop up on my stomach and chest in bed and not feel like I'm getting burned. The weight is also much lighter than most laptops, but still heavier than almost all netbooks.Overall, I find this "nifty" because it really does what it purports to do, and the lightness and coolness are definitely noticeable. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for being an excellent product, but have reluctantly knocked off a star for the confusing description of features (I know, that's not really about the laptop, but it gives me pause).I will update this review if durability issues crop up. Most of the other things I don't like are purely about the software, but I can't see subtracting a star for something that's new to me (Windows 8).

4Way better than your big-box retail buy
By E
- Owned since 03/2012- Best Buy Refurb for about $650 USD- 2 reference units (mine and my girlfriend's) I really don't know what other reviewers in other places were talking about. If you do a Google search for vpceg37fm/w, one will findridiculously great reviews. I have to agree!!! Both units areespecially quiet. There is barely a fan noise and the harddrives were also very quiet. A HUGE PLUS is that this machine iscool cool cool. I cannot stress this point enough!!! When i'mlayin on the couch and i have this machine laying on my personsthere is virtually NO heat. Whether i have it on battery or AC,you can burn DVDs, do hdmi out, virus scan, whatever, and youcan barely feel heat anywhere on the underside. The heat vent onthe left side does a great job pulling heat out of the system... From the reviews on Sony's website, I think that the refurbsmight have had replacement fans or shoddy heat~sink/compoundissues. Thankfully for our Vaios this is not the case. Now here is the especially awesome part: My co-worker has a 13inch Mac book Pro of about the same vintage. They asked me toBoot Camp their Mac. (That means dual boot mac and another OS ontheir mac machine.) As i installed the drivers for the Windowssetup, my jaw dropped to the floor. Virtually all the driversneeded were for EXACTLY the same components that are in thismachine!!! The little MBP 13 inch which has a lower screenresolution was hot enough to cook eggs on. Keep in mind that theMBP in question had close to equal processors and the samegraphics chip #Intel HD 3000# which is embedded on the CPU. I had to geek it up a bit, so I invested in 2x4gb PNY genericmemory. (Stock it had a 1x 4gb stick) and added a 120 GB intelSATA 2 solid state drive. I was able to get my windowsexperience score from 4.7 to 6.2. In comparison, another co-worker gave me their HP dv 6T Beats Audio edition 17 inch laptopto ensure it was ready for prime time dvd video burning. Thiswas fresh out of the box. The Windows Experiencee Index scoredthe machine with a 5.2. This was a second gen sandybridge I7beast, bested by the little 'old second gen I5 Vaio. As for the audio, this Vaio has mediocre speakers. Make sure youget the latest and greatest drivers FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF THECOMPONENT. This goes for the audio, video, chipset and networkdrivers. If you update your drivers from Sony or Microsoft, youwont get the best. This is especially helpfull for the subparspeakers ~ the new audio drivers greatly improve loudness of theaudio. Other side notes are that if you be a nerd, this vaio doessupport virtualization @ the bios level! Installed memory issamsung, and they know memory chips. Battery life is on par withthe comparible mac as well. The diamond~plate design of theplastic is great, no smudges! Chicklet keyboard is great, nicetravel on the keys and spacing is good. The dv 6 mentioned has achicklet as well, but the travel and spacing of the keys isnowhere near as nice. HDMI output to a samsung 40 inch tv isjust a matter of plugging it in and hitting the hdmi button onthe tv's remote. If you decide to upgrade to an SSD configuration, i'd reccomendan intel. The example unit I chose was an SSDSA2CW120G3. Theretail package comes with an SATA to 2x usb dongle and asilicone slip cover. You take out the old drive, pop in the newdrive... VOILA! you now can put the cavernous 650 gb originaldrive in the silocone slip and you have an instant portabledrive. You might want to spend the 15 bucks or so on amazon andget an aluminum enclosure though. All and all this machine has made my fellow nerds give thumbs upfor this investment... To buy 2 of these and be on par if notbetter than a spec-wise comparible Macbook Pro is gratifying.I apologize for any typos and gramatical errors in advance.Leave some positive comments for this machine. The cheap compaqcq60-215DX that it replaced had served well for 3+ years, andwas junk... I think i should get about 6+ years out of thismachine, easily.Cheers!E

3The thrill is gone
By Kim Fowler
I bought two of these VAIOs, one in pink and one in white. October 11, 2011, I bought the white one from BestBuy. I thought that for the price of this laptop and Sony's reputation, that I should not have to buy the extended plan. (Wrong!!) I have an older cheaper uglier laptop that is a Sony VAIO and it is still truckin along. So I guess 2 out of 3 Sony VAIO laptops that still work is pretty good. Not so, the laptop's motherboard should last over two years and I will not buy Sony again. I have had the same inconsistencies with Sony products in the past, i.e, televisions and cameras. But that was such a long time ago. I thought things had gotten better since my mother's VAIO desktop is a trooper and never caused a problem,But I am a girl and the laptop was too pretty to resist. I will know better to look beyond the package for my next purchase. Is there a laptop manufacturer that puts out a product that is consistent with little maintenance required except for the usual updates that will last at least 5 years without problems? The laptop has a sleek look to it and if looks were everything, I would give this laptop a 5 star. The only flaw I see in the design is the DVD placement. If you sit with this laptop on your lap, the CD Rom will continually pop open.I loved the laptop while it lasted. Next time, I will buy a cheaper brand with an extended warranty. :( RIP my beautiful laptop...Now to shop for an ugly, but stable laptop.

5Great Laptop, no complaints!
By Kara
Pros: Windows 7 was one of the main reasons I decided on this computer. I didn't want to buy Office or my other software programs again which you would have to with Windows 8. Screen resolution is really nice. Everything is crystal clear and sharp. I like the matte screen which has a wide range of adjustable brightness without the glare. Back-lit keyboard is a plus. The keyboard is nice to type on; I was afraid it would feel a little shallow after some reviews I read but the key depth is just fine. I don't use the mouse pad, I've never liked them so I can't say much about that. It is very quiet. There are two settings which determine how the fan runs, but even when its on, it is fairy quiet. Battery life seems to be pretty decent. Not much bloatware to uninstall. I've had computers that were completely loaded with useless programs but this one is not. Has an optical drive, which is rare for it being such a thin and light weight computer.Cons: Not many really. Like I said it has an optical drive which is a slot loading one. When you boot up or come out of sleep mode and open the laptop it always runs and makes noise for a couple seconds. I disabled it but to no avail it still spins up every time! It's not a deal breaker by any means. The lid was not quite what I was expecting. I thought magnesium alloy was a metal type material however the lid certainly looks and feels like plastic. It is a rougher feeling plastic though, like I said not flimsy. I quickly got over it though, its a nice looking computer.Overall I am very happy with it. I spent $800 which was a little more than I originally wanted to spend but I feel it was worth it. I hope to keep this laptop for a long time.

4Powerful and Fast but with Ventilation Concerns
By A Nerd
The laptop is powerful and fast, but the only downside is that it's ventilation isn't the best. The area where hot air is released is significantly blocked by the laptop screen when open. This can cause high temperatures and can cause lag. What I'm most afraid of is internal problems because too hot can ruin circuitry. Once I was just casually playing SWBF2 to test out the computer and when I felt the underside it was like asphalt in midday during summer. I'm a bit concerned but besides that this laptop is great.UpdateAfter 3 months this laptop is still holding up against all the games (black ops, mw3, skyrim, etc). But a new problem I came across is that it was made for hard drive replacement to be pretty hard. the cable that connects to the hard drive is blocked by where the battery connects to the computer, making it difficult to take it out. And I REALLY want to get an SSD in there (I suspect the 7200 rpm is a bottleneck).

5Exceptionally good for windows - Suprisingly great Linux/Ubuntu laptop!
By Aaron
First off, I must say that when searching for a new laptop Sony honestly was at the bottom of my list. I normally find them overpriced, underpowered and what can I say I am still a bit miffed about them removing Linux support from my PS3. What I can tell you after spending a few hours with my new VAIO, is that I am unexpectedly happy, this is really a very good machine. To explain how I wound up with Sony out of all the Laptops out their available on Amazon and why I am so happy, here is my short list of requirements that led me too VPCSA43FX.1. Linux compatibility (Ubuntu Precise Pangolin)2. Discrete Graphics3. Not NVidia Discrete Graphics4. i5 or faster cpu5. Higher than 720p screen resolution (has 1600x900)6. Less than 14" screen size7. Something that looks professional and stylish8. Thin and LightSo that list is kinda like driving directions to this laptop there isn't much else available that compares and is reasonably priced. For Windows users, I find performance is more than adequate, it's not an i7, and not the fastest discrete card out there, but it is an exceptional mix of style, performance, and gaming ability for a good value at the 1k price point today. For anyone that is an Ubuntu Linux user and is interested, this laptop works brilliantly as an Ubuntu dual boot system. From un-boxing this laptop to having a fully functional dual boot win7 and Ubuntu 12.04 laptop took less than 1.5 hours. This includes the time to download and burn the Ubuntu installation disk as well as complete the win7 setup and patch downloads (your download time may vary of course). Nearly every bell and whistle works right out of the box with no additional work to make Linux happy. This includes the often broken features below:Wireless - CheckSound - CheckWebCam - CheckVolume control - CheckBrightness control - CheckTouchpad -CheckATI Card - CheckHDMI - Check!Keyboard Back light - CheckAbsolutely amazing! Sony who has demonstrated themselves to be very unfriendly to Linux users through the torture of their PS3 Linux enthusiasts, has released what is nearly the perfect Linux laptop! Not too mention that just a quick reboot and you're back in windows with an adequately performing gaming laptop, at least for last years games!I normally have some minor list of complaints, however right now I just have a big smile as I wrap up this post written in Ubuntu a couple hours after receiving VPCSA43FX.Excellent work Sony!A side note - delivery via Amazon Prime was spot on!

1Very disappointing
By Alison Williams
I have had trouble with this computer overheating since it arrived. It has a noisy fan. Now it won't boot up and so I sent it in to get fixed. They are saying that it needs a new battery. I have had this computer less than a year and don't expect to have these problems so I am really disappointed. I am wondering if this was a refurbished unit that they sent me.

4And on the third day... the touchpad got me! (touchpad fixed)
By geekinma
I have had this laptop for about 3 days now. I had been wanting the zenbook since the original UX31E had come out, but held back after the reviews about the keyboard and the touchpad. The new display on the ux31a was an instant sell. Having used nothing but high resolution laptops, i had hung on to my trusty HP 6820p for 4+ years. The reviews for UX31 are mostly on the mark, but strangely somehow still fail to point the one "true" issue. Now moving on to something more useful..1) The display is to die for. I spent an hour with the retina mac pro, while i didn't see both the screens side by side. I'm ecstatic that ASUS is finally pushing laptops to move up from the resolution backsliding going on for the last 5 years. You will not miss the retina display on a mac with this. Half the price is just a bonus.2) It is _light_.3) The biggest showstopper is the touchpad out of the box. Yes, i'm referring to the touchpad on ux31, not the older ux31e. Multi touch etc. etc. works well. (have two macs at home for comparison). The thing that just about ruins this little gem is the horrendous behavior of the touchpad when your palm brushes it during typing. There is no way you can really avoid this, and it is impossible to do any typing without the cursor moving and the tap to touch causing irritating behavior. (like prematurely sending an email, closing the email, clicking a background app into focus). How this went past anyone in any QA dept. is beyond me. It's that bad, just typing a 2 line sentence is near impossible. This was entirely preventable with just a bit more diligence by ASUS. This one problem is bad enough to warrant a return if it weren't the fix that later became available.I upgraded the drivers to the THEN latest on the ux31a page on asus support. They didn't work any better. Update: ASUS has finally put an updated version that addresses the issue much better.Initially i was concerned that I was out of luck and that this could be a trackpad hardware limitation. Thankfully a bit of investigation digging through the registry in the HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ElanTech revealed a plethora of values that seeemed promising.Further investigation led to a rather huge thread on this topic on the laptop support forums for the elan trackpads on Samsung laptops. A bit of spelunking revealed an updated driver (10.7.16.1). This one proved to be a winner. Not sure if it was the actual driver update, or the very significantly different configuration settings in the registry that made the difference, but at the end of the day the problem is mitigated nearly completely (and without disabling the trackpad while you are typing).I think there is still some fine tuning to do with the relatively sensitive trackpad, but am a bit more at ease as I think it's just a matter of tweaking the settings just right. I think the elan folks will get it right with just a bit more time. I wish the control panel utility gave you more tuning options without having to figure it out on a trial and error approach with the registry variables. The newer version samsung is using has an 'advanced' tab which seems to be heading in this directionThis is my first ever review and I am only writing it because I really dig this laptop. I'd hate to have this not succeed due to the egregious trackpad palm detection issue. Asus's strength is clearly not software QA.A few other observations that I haven't seen mentioned before.4) The adapter when plugging into socket always seems to spark as it's plugged in. I haven't seen this from any other adapter, so am wondering about the reliability. It also seems to run a bit hot compared the mac one. This is just an observation, not an issue (i had no less than 5 adapters fail with the HP). Update: I was looking for additional adapters so I don't have to keep carrying the one around, they seem to extremely expensive online, ~$120. There are non ASUS brands available all the way down to $15, so will probably try one of those, I wonder what the difference is. I suspect it's to do with the charging logic / led indicator on the OEM one. I thought the charging controller was in the laptop and not the adapter, but not entirely sure about this now.5) The keyboard is just fine, I saw some posts ranting about ux31 keyboard, and i don't know what they are talking about. It's pretty good, and i type reams.6) There is bleeding of light at the bottom of the lcd, but it's a non issue and an observation i made only because I read about it on other reviews.7) The keyboard backlighting is nice to have.. but again, don't think it's as big a deal as it's been made out to be when it was missing in ux31e.8) The display hinge is just fine, it holds up well. If you suddenly lift it, then there might be a tad amount of sway. I think it's only because this laptop is so thin and light that people apply more g's. (I couldn't do that with my old laptop with both my hands if i wanted to because it was so heavy). It feels pretty sturdy compared to the luddite laptop i am used to.9) I had tried win 8 for a short period on this laptop, seemed to work about the same. (Reverted to win 7 for work reasons after an hour or so).10) The battery seems to last 6+ hours with just web browsing / email..11) The wifi has been working well, no problems so far. The previous HP laptop I had would lose WIFI connection whenever the microwave went on for a minute. This one hasn't exhibited that problem.12) The USB to Ethernet adapter is unfortunately 10/100, not Gigabit.. and for me it's a big deal. Copying around large VMs is the norm and this limitation is a rather big issue. The limitation seems to be from the PHY ASUS is sourcing from 'asix'? They seem to have a new USB3 to GBE part available, so I'm sure in future models this limitation will be addressed. I wonder why they didn't go with USB 2 to GBE phy as it seems to have been available for a while. It works well, counter intuitively its actually proving to be nicer to use the USB connection than the RJ45 jack.13) The built in VGA adapter worked great when using a projector. Haven't tried out the HDMI out yet, need to go buy a micro HDMI cable.14) Headphone out works fine, another reviewer mentioned an issue so tested it just in case.Rating a 4, due to the trackpad runaround that's now resolved. Folks with trackpad issues should just get the latest version from ASUS or Samsung support site. I prefer the Samsung driver.

5A solid ultrabook
By Eric
Edit: My second laptop doesn't have any problems. I'm getting about 5 hours of battery life while doing light programming and listening to music on auto-brightness (there's a brightness sensor) which sets the display at about 60 percent brightness indoors.I received this laptop a few hours ago and I'm going to give my first impressions on the device.Build Quality and Design:Apart from the different color on the keyboard and lack of hideous script font above the keyboard that was on the original zenbook, the Prime looks about the same. Since this is the 31A, it has a Aluminum Unibody design, and from messing around with various Macbook Air's this device seems to be just as well built. I like the front panel design over the Air but that's down to personal preference.Accessories:Being an $1000+ device I would expect a nice amount of goodies, and included is a VGA and Ethernet adapter. There is no micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter, but I find myself using VGA most of the time when giving presentations anyway, so I suppose that's not too bad of a loss. The Air (afaik) does not come with these adapters so that is a small plus. The adapters have their own little pouch to store separately. The combination synthetic leather/canvas sleeve that is included fits fairly snugly, though there is enough space to cram in an adapter if you need to. The AC adapter is about the same size as the Apple counterpart, which is good.Screen Quality:Being a UX31A the laptop packs a 1920x1080 Matte IPS panel. In a not-very-scientific test viewing angles (obviously) far exceed that of my desk TN panel, and brightness and contrast all seem to be much better. Granted, I'm comparing to a 23" Hanns LCD I paid $60 for. There was a comment earlier about the screen being dimmer than that of the previous gen, and I haven't tested it outside, but it seems to just fine for my purposes. The matte finish is also a plus. There is a bit of back light bleed on the bottom and right hand sides of the screen, but when watching a sample 1080p movie, it didn't bother me at all. I like the increased resolution on the device and it's a definite step up from traditional 1366x768 panels. Text is sometimes a bit small on the default size in chrome but that is easily remedied.Performance:Thankfully, an ADATA XM11 128GB SSD is included. This is a Sandforce drive and I'm getting benchmark scores of 470/150 MB/s RW Sequential, 18/44 MB/s RW 4K random, 113/144 MB/S RW 4k Random 64QD, and access times of .155/.277 ms RW, for a total score of 462 in AS-SSD. This is comparable to my old Vertex 2 in my desktop, so no worries about disk performance here. The system boots boots in about 20 seconds and resumes quickly. It scores a 7.9 WEI in terms of disk performance, though that's not a the best indicator in general.I haven't done anything intensive with the CPU yet but things seem to be holding up well with little slowdown. I also tried messing around in Diablo III on the integrated HD4000 graphics. I set the game to 1024x768, and everything else to minimum, and from a short session of Act III Inferno, the graphics performed okay, with some stutter and slowdown depending on how many effects were on the screen. If you want to do more than just casual gaming, go for the UX32VD with the GT620M graphics. After playing for a bit the fan kicked on and hot air began coming out of the vent located above the keyboard. The fan was not loud enough to hear over the speakers, which put out a decent amount of volume for the size of the laptop.Keyboard/Trackpad:Asus touts the keyboard as being much improved over the previous generation, though I'm not sure if I notice that. I've tried out the original zenbook at stores a few times and this feels similar. I've typed this review on the keyboard without any problems, but it'll be clear to you that you are typing on a scissor-switch laptop keyboard. This also leads to me to the flaw in my item - the backlight. Two of the keys in the center refuse to light at all, regardless of the brightness level I set. Hence, it's going back to Amazon for an exchange. Pity. The trackpad is made by Elantech, which may make some people cringe, but for the most part, I haven't had a problem. I like to rest one hand on the left click button and right other to scroll, and there were no glitches I noticed in the last few hours. The only multi-touch feature I really use is two finger scrolling, which works well enough in Chrome. It's not as smooth as OSX is, but I would assume that is because of Windows 7, and will be improved in Windows 8.If you're trying to decide between this and the Air, it mainly comes down to a few factors - OS, Screen Quality, Discrete Graphics, and support. If you have a rabid obsession with one OS over the other your choice should already be clear. If you value screen quality, both are solid choices - while the Air has a 1440x900 TN panel, it still looks good, though the viewing angles are likely not as wide, and the resolution obviously lower. Anandtech rates both this laptop and the Air well in screen quality. If you value discrete graphics, only the UX32 line offers you that. If you value support I would go with the Air, as nothing beats being able to go into a store and coming out with a fixed laptop. If you're set on Windows or want a 1080P IPS Panel, no other ultrabook touches the Zenbook prime right now. Sony has a similarly-specced laptop out, which has a GT640LE and 1600x900 screen, but that is much heavier and thicker. This is an expensive device, no doubt, so if you can give up some screen quality and are okay with slightly slower integrated graphics, you should consider a previous gen ultrabook.

5Zenbook Prime DB51
By foot attack
I ordered this Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 ultrabook from Amazon and received it promptly and in perfect condition this week. The i5 proc (newer "ivy bridge" model) has plenty of power for my use (and for almost any average use), and for what I'm using this for, I also don't need more than 128GB of storage, so I decided to go with this model instead of the DB72, which has the i7 proc and 256 SSD. I had been waiting for this upgraded Zenbook to come out for a little while, and Amazon was the 1st place I found that had it available, and I have usually had very good experiences purchasing through Amazon, so the negligible difference in price between Amazon's price and the suggested retail price wasn't an issue. So far, this is everything I thought it would be and I absolutely love it. In my opinion, the display is extremely nice, HD 1080p, and the screen is low-glare, so it looks great and is easy on the eyesight. In addition to the newer model proc, the screen is another nice upgrade from the previous Zenbook. The keyboard is perfect and comfortable (and backlit, which the previous Zenbook was lacking). It's very light and portable, fits in my purse with the included envelope-type sleeve, which is a pretty decent cover, at least until I find a sleeve or case I like better. After researching many different models and manufacturers, the only other "ultrabook" that I considered before purchasing the Zenbook Prime was the Macbook Air. I'm not an Apple product hater, but I honestly just prefer a Windows machine, so this ultrabook was the clear winner for me, and I couldn't be happier with it so far. I could go on and on comparing the two machines, and describing the technical specs of this Zenbook Prime, but there are so many technical reviews out there that already do that very well (and I think Apple/Mac vs. PC/Windows thing that I constantly see on forums everywhere is so boring it's ridiculous!!!!), so I'm just giving my initial personal experience and opinions about this product that I purchased in this review. It is awesome! It's lived up to all the critical acclaim and all of my expectations of it so far.

1CTRL key locks up daily
By rinehart55
Since using this Laptop we have had nothing but issues. From faulty wireless card, to buttons locking. This laptop is used for business and everyday the CTRL key locks itself and has to be rebooted to unlock it. Today it took 25 minutes to boot up. This is unacceptable.
