Excellent laptop for the money, excellent craftsmanship

Actually, I bought this directly from Dell. Same model. I read another review on this laptop here, and I'm very puzzled by the response. No mention of the laptop itself, just complaints about certain electronic parts in the laptop itself.Unboxing, it came out looking beautiful. Brushed aluminum. Solid solid feel. Since I bought from the consumer side and not the government side, where I usually do all my shopping, the computer did come with bloatware. I uninstalled over half of all the programs in the Uninstall control panel. All the dell online stuff, the backup stuff, photo stuff, etc.Then I optimized using MSCONFIG which programs start up. This machine boots fast and boy is it nice. Bright screen, and what I really like about it is the backlit keys. I haven't figured out yet how to extend the time the keys stay lit. If I'm reading something, after a couple minutes the keys will go out. Then I tap the space key and they light up again. Nice soft white flourescent color. Very modern and classy looking.Dell has been at this for a long time and they really know what they're doing. This is a very solid, fast performer. Just do like I did and remove all the bloateware before using it. I removed MacAfee right off the bat and installed Avast Free version. Been using it for years, never lost an OS because of viruses.The sound is incredible. Wow, clear, super heavy bass lines. The sound through headphones is excellent, but the sound coming from the laptop itself will really amaze you.I've been using this for about a month and I love it more than my Dell desktop at work. The screen is really bright and high resolution. You can get a lot of text and windows on this screen. Super clear too, I think it's LED.Believe me, this is money well spent. You won't find a better deal.

Great purchase for the price.

I got lucky and was able to get this laptop for $730 new on Amazon. The sound/speaker setup is outstanding and one of the best I've seen/heard for a laptop. Easily equal to any moderate sound setup for a desktop. Although having the speakers roughly where your hands are when you type is a slight annoyance, it really doesn't distract to much from the sound quality, just something to be aware of.Video/monitor is acceptable and adequate for my needs, though I do wish I could have found an inexpensive version of this model with the 1920x1080 screen, however my eyes aren't as good as they used to be and the 1600x900 is fine. The Nvidia GT 550M graphics card is a BIG surprise and a terrific value! Runs almost everything I run at high or ultra settings.I did mark it down one star because the BIOS is pretty basic and allows for only extremely basic settings. Although the system and the i5 is capable of utilizing 1600Hmz memory (which I upgraded to 8Gig from the 6Gig's it came with), you'll need to find an "unlocked" version of the BIOS in order to do so. Which is risky and do to that, I'll have to wait until the warranty expires before I attempt that. So I'm stuck with 1333Mhz memory speeds till then. If you are willing to spend the extra money you can get the GT 555M graphics and the higher res screen and even 3D graphics (only the 3D graphics version supports 16Gigs of memory).I also include the expense to replace the battery and AC cord/brick as a negative and include that cost in the 1 star markdown.The system does run on the warm side, and I would strongly recommend getting an appropriate sized laptop cooler (with fan). In a well cooled environment you could get away with a passive pad, but even then I would recommend one with a fan. Stressing the system (gaming), I've seen temps as high as 84C for the system and the graphics get as warm as 64C. The left side of the keyboard/palm rest and exhaust port do get very very warm (approaching hot) and can get somewhat uncomfortable during long sessions at those temperatures.All in all for a shoe string budget, this was a great purchase that will let me do my work as well as game with today's modern gaming software. It is a bit heavy and for long trips may prove somewhat burdensome, but with a good carrying case/backpack is doable. I wanted something with a big screen and the 17.3" screen does help ease these older eyes, and I knew the price would be a hefty laptop. It is not as heavy as some of the others I was considering however, and a lot less expensive!

Mac user here buying a PC for work. I find this computer is a little heavy in weight but otherwise it is really a pretty machine and quite fast. The screen is clear and bright and I love the back lit keyboard. It boots quickly and that is a plus in a PC. I am quite pleased with this new purchase so far.
