5Love it
By zachb
I don't usually do reviews but this computer had no reviews and I love this machine. One thing about the marketing page though. Amazon has it advertised as 1 TB 7200 Hard drive. Instead, it has 2 Western Digital 500 GB 7200 RPM drives which are very easy to access in terms of opening up the laptop and messing with hardware. I have not changed any hardware and do not intend to. The screen is fantastic, the 1920x1080 res just makes everything look beautiful. The 17.3 inches is a little big but it's easy enough to carry around. This laptop is not advertised as a gaming laptop but every game I have tried so far, Assassins Creed Franchise, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Sid Meier's Civilization 5, run perfectly with no lag even when running at full graphics. Today, I have spent almost 4 hours gaming without turning off or taking a break and the laptop external surface temp is room temperature if not a tad bit cooler. The included subwoofer is a nice addition which virtually takes out all of the tinny sounds that laptops are almost infamous for. When I have blasted the speakers at their full capacity I was able to hear this laptop almost 75 ft away with no issues. The computer does come with a decent amount of pre-installed software but nothing that can't be uninstalled via the control panel. Also, the side button on the side that can be programmed is very nice. Also, the case is classy and sophisticated. The brushed aluminium design makes the computer look sleek and professional.I only have two complaints with it so far.1. The track pad. It looks nice and the concept with multi-gesture support is interesting, but it doesn't work. I don't like it. The pad is flimsy and a little over sized and the clicking is temperamental. However, this doesn't bother me too much because I use an external Logitech G500 mouse and I have disabled the track pad.2. The keyboard tends to stick when you press keys too hard but its barely noticeable when typing.Overall, amazing laptop and I am very pleased with my purchase. If you are looking at the Asus N56VZ-DS71, the hardware is virtually the same, except for the hard drives and resolution size. I went with this one because the N56 has a 5400 rpm drive which causes severe bottleneck issues in terms of power. On a side note, I was able to transfer roughly 50 GB of music from an external hard drive to this computer in under 10 minutes. I'm happy I spent the extra 100 dollars on this faster laptop, though I wish it was offered in the 16.3 inch size. If you want to see an in depth video review, look up xoticpc Asus N76VZ-DS71 on youtube. They have a really nice 25 minute video review. I chose to buy from amazon because at the time it was the better deal. Love the Asus name and this laptop.UPDATEJust a couple things I have found after using this laptop for several months. It has an internal high quality microphone which I didn't realize at the time and that Amazon did not advertise. Also, I was mistaken, the hard drives are not western digital, they are seagate. When you buy this laptop, the two hard drives are partitioned into 4 hard drives each containing roughly 256 gb. This is one thing I do not like and I didn't realize it until after I bought it and installed all of my software on. You can fix it but it requires you to format your hard drives which means losing windows 7 unless you made a recovery disk or something similar. In my initial review, I said I hated the trackpad. After 2 months, I've gotten used to it and love the multi-gesture support system. One last thing, recently I tripped while transporting it and fell on the laptop on concrete. True, the laptop was in a bag but I find it very impressive that I fell on it (I'm not a small guy) and it didn't even take cosmetic damage and continues to function perfectly.

5Beyond expectation
By Jinquan Yu
I never wrote a review for a computer. I figure that there may be other readers in my shoes debating which one to choose so I am sharing my experience as a reference point but the decision is ALWAYS yours.I was looking for my i7 desktop replacement. Not that my desktop is obsolete but it's noisy and generating too much heat that makes my study room hot in the summer. I was hoping to find a laptop that is not too bad in performance compared to my desk top and not too expensive either. This laptop beats my expectation!I was debating between this one and Samsung Series 7 NP700Z7C-S03US. I was thinking that the Samsung advantage might be: 1. lighter; 2. better look. ASUS advantage is: 1. two hard drive bay that allows me to install SSD as system drive and use the 2nd hd for data; 2. Bluray burner; 3. ASUS warranty; 4. price advantage. Once I got the ASUS, the 2nd Samsung advantage disappeared as the ASUS looks gorgeous and the display is even more impressive. I went back to CompUsa to look at the Samsung again and feel that I like the look of the ASUS better. (CompUsa doesn't have the ASUS on display.) Once I got the machine, I replaced the 2nd HD with 128 GB SSD and installed Win 7 Ultimate. (I kept the 1st drive intact so the factory Win 7 Home and software are still in place.)The WEI scores are CPU 7.6, RAM 7.7, Graphics 7.1/7.1, HD/SSD 7.7. This is on par with my i7 desktop system and the speed of booting, starting/running applications are on par with my desktop as well. The machine runs very quiet and for regular use (not gaming), it runs cool. Hardware Monitor reports highest core temperature at just over 60 degree Celsius for the last few days. I can feel warm surface on top of hard drive bays and on top of areas of vents. The back lit keyboard is great. I moved the laptop around my home and the wireless connection was at highest strength all the time. I played Avator and The Magic of Flight Bluray discs. The display is supurb. Sound quality is impressive as well (for a laptop).Only two things to my dislike: The track pad does interfere with typing occasionally. I got around this by disabling it and using a wireless mouse. By the way you can configure it such that it be disabled once an external mouse is enabled. Or you can use the FN key to disable or enable it. The 2nd thing I don't like is that it has a big power adapter. It's only an issue if you need to carry the laptop for a trip. I do wish ASUS will make a smaller/lighter power adapter (I don't know if other brands have lighter power adapter as I never had a laptop of this spec).Given the appearance, performance and configurability of this laptop, I would recommend it to someone with similar needs.

5Backlit keyboard
By Amped
I bought this for my wife, thinking it was a great laptop for the money. As is turns out, it is even better than I thought. She loves it and is extrememly happy with the speed, the sound quality, and the fact that it's quiet and light.I also found out that it does indeed have a backlit keyboard, although this hasn't been mentioned in the reviews or the specs listing. Also the Asus logo on the back lights up. I dunno how this will affect anyone, as my wife covered it with a sticker. For the money, I dont beleive there to be anything that comes close to this laptop. The fact that it's quiet, fast, has a blu ray player and a 1080P screen as well as a light up keyboard at this price point is remarkable. Throw in the Nvidia GT 650m for playing games and this is an incredible value. In fact I intend to get another one for myself.
