1More shady practices and terrible customer service from the masters at Lenovo. The Y480 is absolutely horrid
By Samuel Mitchell
If you check out some of my other reviews it will be easy to see that I am not a fan of Lenovo. Out of all the companies I have dealt with, they are probably the worst - as their underhanded business practices (using poor re-branded GPU's, subpar parts, etc), and poor customer service combine to create a perfect storm of mediocrity. The sad thing is, I used to be a huge Lenovo supporter (thanks to their excellent ThinkPad line), but just got let down a few too many times with all their other products.Contrary to my warnings against doing so, a friend recently purchased this Y480 model. After playing with it for just a few hours, he was at my doorstep and asking for help. We ended up returning this product and I will go on to explain why in this review. My biggest issue with this heap is that the so called GT640M LE in this laptop is a re-branded (and under-clocked) GT 550M (image uploaded with review). Its actual performance is WORSE than that of a 550M in my wife's much older Acer (with a slightly weaker CPU to boot). Almost 4% worse according to 3D Mark. However the best part of this wonderful GPU is that it overheats and throws up tons of artifacts on newer games such as Guild Wars 2, Planetside 2, The Secret World, and even Tera Online! These artifacts persist for a few minutes before going away while the fan kicks into overdrive and your system sounds like a jet engine.Sound popping is once again back in this model, just like with previous IdeaPads. Every so often while gaming it makes a snap crackle and pop sound. Very distracting, and I am sad to see that this is still a problem (I had it happen with a previous IdeaPad purchased years ago).Contacting Lenovo support, we were told that the Y480 has no known sound static problems, and the GT640M LE is actually the 384 shader version. I offered to provide the tech with a screenshot stating the opposite and was told that screenshots could be faked... Yeah, amazing support. The tech suggested that we send in the laptop for repair and told us that not only would we have to pay for shipping, but if they found nothing wrong - we would be charged a service fee.Below is my standard Good, Bad and Ugly review. The Good:- The third gen I5 in this laptop is fairly powerful.- Keyboard has a nice feel to it.- Good wireless card. The Bad:- Sound device issues. The random static like pops are enough to drive you insane while gaming.- Terrible 1366 x 768 resolution. Not that the GPU can handle even that on lower settings (in modern games).- Slow 5400RPM Hard Drive, that for some reason is also very loud.- Less than 1 hour of gaming time, and about 3 hours of YouTube browsing.- Horrible touchpad that had issues properly detecting clicks. The Ugly:- Old GT 550M re-labeled and sold as a 640M LE. This is done by NVIDIA but Lenovo is one of the very few laptop manufacturers that use the (MUCH CHEAPER) 96 shader version. The real 640M LE is supposed to have 384 shaders (and I have mine running at 850 MHZ without a problem - in another laptop that is).- Comes loaded with a loads of trash. Anything that includes McAfee Internet Security should be destroyed. Conclusion:If you want to deal with terrible customer service and sub-par hardware, by all means purchase this overpriced hunk of junk. I would stay away, far away. For just a hundred dollars more you can get a nice Sony, Acer Timeline or Toshiba laptop or ultrabook.

5great, but you have to know what you're buying
By andy
I read many reviews on this product before I decided to buy it, and some of them seem to intentionally try to scare you out of buying this product. I believe that this is a great laptop, but if you have to know what to expect when you are buying it in order for your expectations to match the product you are ordering. So, let me tell you what this laptop is, and, maybe more importantly, what this laptop is not.Value:This is a value laptop. It is not a high-end, do-all laptop. I purchased it for $900 after taxes. At that price I believe that you can live with the limitations this laptop has. The main limitations this laptop has, which are repeated across any review you probably read about this laptop, are as follows:1)screen: It's true. The screen is not the best screen in the world. Bright colors look pretty well on it, and it's not incredibly glossy either, but when you look at darker images you can really notice it. The colors blend together when you are looking at dark images, and no matter how much you raise the lighting of your screen it can't be undone. Also, the blacks do look sort of gray-ish. However, in your day to day computing it's not that annoying. If you're into demanding games, or detailed picture/movie editing, this might be a deal-breaker. In my case it was not.2) battery: You know, this is something people say really sucks on this computer. I'd disagree. The battery lasts 4-5 hours on one charge. The computer has a great power-saving system that gives your computer extra juice in case of an emergency. Now, it doesn't last as much as more expensive computers and smaller computers. That being said, this is not an ultraportable computer, and if that is what you want, you should not buy this computer. Which leads me to my next point.3) size: Yeah it's big-ish. Its not suppose to be an ultraportable computer, so if that's what you are looking for when you buy it you're obviously not going to like it. That being said, I take it to work every day and it doesn't break my back. It's not a notebook, it's more like a medium-to-light-weight history book.4) plasticky: yes. It's kind of plasticky. It's particularly noticeable in the surroundings of the keyboard. The only aluminium the computer has is behind the screen (the top of the computer when it's closed). Now, let's talk about what makes this a great computer.1) Processor: i7. Need I say more?2) graphics card: Total awesomeness. My last computer had a standard-to-cheap graphics card in it and it would take forever for photoshop and adobe premiere pro to do anything. Not in this computer. Graphics card paired with the processor makes everything work like a breeze.3) speakers: sound awesome. The base is great, they are way louder than my last computer's speakers. I am really really happy with the speakers.4) keyboard: the keyboard is incredibly comfortable. Also, it's backlit, which I was not expecting or particularly interested in, but it's a nice plus.5) overall size-weight: It's exactly what I wanted. Not too big, not to small.6) touchpad: does it's job; works fine with windows 8.7) windows 8: Fear not. It's pretty cool actually. It's a lot less different from former versions of window. I know, it has that scary-looking, oh my god what happened to my computer, introduction screen, but once you get used to it it's fine. I actually almost never use it. You start with it, go to your desktop, and then you don't really have to use it that much anymore. And, who knows, maybe in the future it might really have cool apps and stuff you might like. So, yeah, conclusion. It's a good laptop. It's great for what I needed. If you know what you're buying, buy it. You won't be sorry. If you don't know what you're buying, get off your lazy "rear end" and read some reviews (like this one; yeah the whole thing).Hope this helps!

5Awesome laptop
By Annika D
I've had this laptop for a few months, and so far it's been perfect. Having no issues at all, and speed-wise it's great. The build of the laptop is top-notch, and I've had Lenovo's before and if anything happens to it, I know it will be an easy process to contact them. This laptop is at a great price for such a new model with an Ivy Bridge processor, and it looks very sleek. 14" laptops are always more expensive than the larger ones, and the price Amazon has this for now (under eight hundred) is very good. I priced a similar laptop direct from Lenovo and it ended up being two hundred more expensive. So all in all, very happy with this purchase, and this really is a solid laptop with lots of nice utilities. And the Lenovo brand is one that is known to hold up very well.
