5Great laptop!
By Sorkin
I got this laptop on Black Friday and it's a great deal, even at the regular price! I'm a multi-tasker, so I tend to have numerous programs and Chrome tabs open. This laptop can handle it thanks to the generous amount of RAM. I also have a lot of music, pictures, tv shows and Sims 3 installed and it hasn't slowed it at all.I'm pretty computer literate, but setup was so simple even someone who's never used a computer before could do it.Definitely recommend it!

4Not Bad
By Scooby6934
I recently got this computer for a $100 bucks off on Cyber Monday, and so far it seems to be what they advertise. It's a huge screen but the computer itself is pretty thin and its surprisingly light. Only thing I have a complaint about is they say its 500gb, not exactly the truth. They have loaded it with some much software and other obvious advertisement shortcuts and programs that the usable hard drive space is 416gb...but remember 416gb is still huge and they have dedicated 15.2gb to perform a system recovery

4So far, very happy with this computer!
By Michelle
I bought this computer during Amazon's lightning deals. So far, it works great! I have had multiple windows open at the same time, added multiple applications, watched videos, played games, all of which worked better and faster than any other computer I've had! Internet connection has been great so far. I did have it disconnect a couple of times, but when I told it to connect automatically, I have never had it disconnect again. The only cautious thing I have found so far is the Disk door is not as "solid" as I would have liked. I feel like I should be careful putting disks in it so that I don't crack it or something. But, as long as the inside parts work great, I can deal with being careful with my computer on the outside :)Overall, very happy so far! I definitely love the big screen!

1Theoretically Great
By Peter Beels
I purchased this laptop 6/30. I received and un-boxed it 7/5. It is well-equipped for the price.Positives-The 2nd Gen Core-i5 has excellent benchmarks, comparable and even better than some 1st Gen Core-i7. (See Passmark Benchmark ratings)-The video card puts out 1080p video without issue. It is not really capable of doing any gaming but that is to be expected at this price from the Intel HD 3000.-For the price point the theoretical specs are fabulous, hence my purchase and excitement upon arrival.-It comes with a full size keyboard built in which I enjoy. The sizing and spacing is all acceptable although the backspace is a touch smaller than I would like.As far as negatives are concerned,-The webcam is horrendous, I mean, it works, but the resolution and video quality is pretty shameful. I knew this going into the purchase and was willing to accept it, but if you are hoping for a decent integrated webcam this is not a computer for you. Of course you can always get a very high quality external webcam which will best any internal.-Toshiba Bloatware, I haven't fully investigated them, but a lot of them are redundant to services that windows provides, or just excessive little power hungry toys. Thus far I do actually like the extra power settings, but that is the only one among many.-Other Bloatware (Extra links to install trial programs...etc)Now, the reason for 1-star.The laptop I received on 7/5 was defective. The audio card integrated on the motherboard was deemed defective by Toshiba. Of course Toshiba customer support made me re-install the driver, and "revert to factory settings". I found this excessively annoying as I has just opened the box and reverting to factory settings wouldn't do anything. Regardless the problem remained and they agreed it was defective and told me I could send it to a repair facility (a brand new laptop? and wait a few weeks, i think not). Or Amazon could send me a new one. I have had better dealings with Amazon than Toshiba so I opted for a replacement. Props to Amazon for the prompt replacement (it arrived within 24 hours). Now, believe it or not, the 2nd laptop is also defective. I then had to call Toshiba again to inform them of this. They didn't seem to find it odd that two of the exact same computers are both defective. Anyway Amazon is refunding me the money and I intend to get something else. Preferably not Toshiba despite my previously high impressions of them.I would be interested to know if anyone else is having these issues. For anyone who may be skeptical as to the fact that two computers are both defective let me assure you sound was tested with several samples of audio from the HD, and the internet. It was also tested on both computers using the laptop speakers, Sennheiser Headphones, and a high quality system with Polk Audio speakers.Bottom Line:The specs are great, but I cannot recommend a computer that has come defective 2/2 times. Once is acceptable, it happens, but twice is not acceptable and both Amazon and Toshiba should be ashamed to be selling faulty merchandise repeatedly.[UPDATE]After receiving a third defective laptop I have ordered a Lenovo from Best Buy. I cannot fathom that nobody else is having this issue. This has been tested on numerous receivers, numerous cords, numerous speakers. I have had friends with me to verify that I am in fact not going insane, and Toshiba has verified they are all defective. The error occurs upon setup without changing factory settings at all.Stay away.In other news the touchpad is definitely a little far to the left and while typing I often touch it with my left palm. Minor issue though.

5Very happy with this machine.
By Holly M.
Bear with me here folks, I'm still trying to pull together my thoughts on my brand new laptop here, consider my review a "first draft". :)Received this laptop early this morning. My first impression is pretty good, but I've only been with it for a few hours thus far. I've surfed around online some, streamed some HD video, played a couple games, and removed a ton of bloatware.Was a little worried at first, because the first boot-up took quite awhile, but once I removed some bloatware, shut down, and booted up again, it's ready to go within 20-30 seconds. After running it for 2 hours straight, mostly surfing around online, it's not hot enough to even call it warm, so it should be good about keeping cool. The fan seems to come on pretty often, but it's not very loud, it's mostly just the sound of air moving in and out. Wireless internet seems to work perfectly, and I easily connected to my network.I actually quite like the touchpad on it, which is strange for me to say, because I'm picky about touchpads. I think it works well, and it's slightly textured, but not overly so. The keyboard seems nicely built for a laptop too.I don't own much in the name of games, but I've played some Sim City 4 and The Sims 2 on high settings without any hiccups. HD video streamed smoothly as well.Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase. I'll be updating this review once I spend more time with it and finish getting my thoughts together.Edit: Okay, so I never updated my review, too lazy to do it. However, it is now February 3rd 2012, and this computer is still up and running like new. I've owned it for 7 months and I have had no problems, even though I run it about 7 hours everyday. It continues to run cool, fast, and with no issues at all.

5Perfect laptop for a student
By sumdewd
This is my first laptop, and even though I've only had it for 9 days, I believe I've drawn a conclusion already.Pros: 6gb ram and huge 640gb hard drive Extremely smooth Youtube video playback USB 3, Bluetooth 3, Wireless B/G/N, HDMI and VGA out Quiet Great battery life (in my opinion?)The "chiclet" style keyboard is incredibly easy and satisfying to type on. The keys give off a satisfying light click, and they're far enough away from eachother so I rarely hit another key.I have never seen an HD Youtube video play back so smooth before, not even on my desktop with an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250.Speaking of video performance, Minecraft plays as smooth as my desktop plays it. I have not played other games, but DO NOT buy this laptop for gaming; you'll likely regret it.It takes 22 seconds from power on (with the BIOS option "Load BIOS onto harddisk" checked), until you get a usable Windows 7 login screen.The laptop has quite a few ports and features including: USB 2 and 3, Bluetooth 3, Wireless B/G/N, and HDMI and VGA out. Very handy to have and use all of them.Internet browsing is far from slow, it feels much faster than my desktop.You can only hear the fan occasionally speed up, if you strain to hear it in a quiet room.Battery life is awesome, I was able to type an entire 725 word essay from start to finish with 10% left.(3 hours at least, maybe 4. I lost track of time)Speedfan claims both cores are idling at 109f, but you can hardly feel any warmth from the laptop even after several hours of use.Display is glossy, vivid and bright. Some may see it being glossy as a con; it's fine indoors, but tough to use outside (I never use it outside).The numpad is an awesome feature to include, it was one of my main requirements in a laptop.Windows 7 makes everything feel instant and responsive.I've never run out of ram with the included 6gb.Now onto the bad stuff (Minor whining on my part)Cons: Keyboard is not backlit Off center touchpad location interferes with typing Dust magnet Bloatware madness Speakers suck(ish)This laptop has doesn't have backlit keys, not a con if you know how to type; I just always thought they looked cool at night.Regularly while typing, my hand rests on the touchpad and jumps the mouse around as another reviewer also mentioned. Annoying at times, just reposition your left hand slightly.Needs to be wiped off daily or it grows a beard of dust. (Or maybe I just need to vacuum my room more than once a year)Copious amounts of bloatware -- some bundled with drivers. Google a program before deleting to make sure you don't inadvertently kill flashcards or the touchpad.(Happened to me)Extremely slow until you kill off bloatware and stuff you don't plan on using.As another reviewer stated, I have had the laptop claim it had an hour of battery life left, then 5 minutes later, it shut off. I remember reading through the Toshiba manual, and apparently it has to kind of "calibrate" the battery meter and run itself down once in a while to be accurate; I am guessing this applies to the first cycle especially. It has not done this since.Speakers are clear, but severely lack bass. Using skullcandy earphones remedies that problem.The bright Satellite letters and line above the touchpad can be turned off in the BIOS. I believe another reviewer said that already.I am not a picky person, so these cons don't annoy me enough to be worth subtracting a star. The bottom line is that this is an awesome laptop for everything except gaming. (After you get over the minor quirks.)

5Great bang for the buck
By shotgunb
Got this on lightning deal and with $75 gift card offer (total under $600)... which had a significant impact on my purchase. Had planned on purchasing the U36SD until this deal came up. U36 is a better built machine and has USB 3.0 but otherwise nearly identical. At regular price there is only a $50 difference, but on sale that jumped to nearly $250. Based on this, I took the plunge and went with this machine... and I am very happy I did.Up front... CONs: Compared to the new ultrabooks, the build quality and design are 'so-so', but at this price point I think it is pretty solid. Definitely no 'head turner' and the body feels solid but 'cheap'. I concur with earlier review that USB ports are 'tight' and, while it looks great, the black aluminum cover definitely attracts fingerprints. Stock hard drive seems a bit slow.PROs: Battery life... in excess of 8 hrs in real use... amazing. Monitor... 'standard' but viewing angles are extremely good and much better than other laptops I have. CPU/GPU... both awesome at this price, Core i5 is extremely fast and the optimus run NVidia 520 is great for moderate gaming and video. Basically identical 'guts' as much more expensive laptops in a cheaper body. Weight/size, under 1" thick and under 3 lbs... mixed with battery life and it is an awesome 'traveling' laptop. ADW: pain to sign up for (which upsets many folks) but getting a 1 year accidental damage warranty as part of the base price is awesome and a huge plus for going with an Asus machine... drop it on the way to class... get a replacement!My 4th Asus laptop and I am continually amazed by the bang for the buck from their machines... and the U31SD is no exception. It won't turn heads like the MacBook or ZenBook... but you can buy two of these for the same price as the ultrabook... and it has the same performance with better battery life... save the money and buy yourself an ipad... win-win

5Sleek and lightweight laptop - fast and gaming capable
By Danny Yu
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RYFNUXHZ68YIM The attached video is to give you an idea of how the laptop looks and a summary of my thoughts on this laptop. Here's my written review.The one thing about this laptop that jumps out is how stylish and sleek it is. But it's not all looks. The 2nd gen i5 processor and gt 520m graphics card makes this an all-purpose laptop that let's you not only compute but also play some of today's newest games.In this review I'll talk about the design and performance of this U31SD-AH51 laptop.DESIGN* The laptop's cover is very sleek and stylish. I love flush aluminum finish. However, it does attract quite a bit of fingerprints. It's not a huge problem though.* Love the wrist rest. It has a smooth aluminum finish. Feels great and looks great with it's dark gray color.* Touchpad is very sensitive and feels good. It feels smooth, yet at the same time rough. The right and left click is merged into one chrome click button. It's not too loud when clicked.* The border of the laptop has a glossy finish. Nice touch.* The edges of the laptop is very sleek. USBs, hdmi, memory card reader (on the right of laptop) are all nicely placed. Note that there is no DVD drive, so that makes it thinner.* The battery charger has a right angle head and a quality power block and chord.* Speakers are placed on the bottom edge facing the person.Performance* The nvidia gt 520m is what stands out to me for this laptop. 1GB of dedicated graphics memory is a huge plus. You can play newest games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 at least in the medium settings.* The i5 processor is very capable and computing is fast and slowdowns are rare.* Love the battery modes - high performance, battery saving, auto, etc. It's nice to be able to change the modes according to the task.* Speakers aren't so great. Lack depth and volume.Overall, I love the design and feel of this laptop. A fast, reliable, and gaming-capable laptop. A great combination of style, portability, and power. Highly recommended!

4Helloojer
By Jerry Nazareta
Originally researched the ASUS u36s; Amazon posted this as a newer version. Could be true but it was advertised to have two 2.0 USB slots and one 3.0. I wanted the 3.0 for speedier transfers since I'll have to use an external blu ray drive. Be aware, the unit has three 2.0's and NO 3.0 USB slots. I may return this laptop.

4How to HARDWARE UPGRADE
By KineticSteel
~~~1 year Update~~~I have downgraded the score from 5/5 to 4/5. This laptop is, for the most part, great. However it has several very serious flaws including: Terrible trackpad, bad monitor, and bad sound.-Performance- 3/5 [Average]Very powerful specs. This laptop may not be a gaming laptop, but will play most things you throw at it very well. Including AutoCAD, SAP2000, light games, and Movies.-Build- 5/5 [Excellent]All in all, its built very well. The exterior, as you can see, is beautiful.-Keyboard- 4/5 [Good]The keyboard looks and feels very nice. The keyboard is slightly narrower than usual, which makes it feel a little awkward. But I haven't had any problems typing.-Trackpad- 1/5 [Terrible]This trackpad is a piece of junk, after using it for a year, I've learned to use the "F6" -turn off trackpad button- more than 90% of the time.I have also disabled "tap to click" and "multi-finger gestures." Left/Right clicking is a nightmare.-Monitor- 2/5 [Bad]The monitor is 1366x768. Which is pretty disappointing - but it the norm for 14in laptops and even 15in laptops. The colors are a bit washed out, and I really notice it when I have my laptop next to my desktop monitor. There is definitely a sweet spot for using the monitor, and its pretty small. The hinges don't let it bend back all the way. I'd say, you get about 135 degrees of motion on the hinges. This laptop also has terrible viewing angles.-Sound- 2/5 [Bad]The speakers on this laptop just don't push enough. They are useless in most enviroments that have ambient noise. The quality of the sound itself is pretty average.-Weight- 5/5 [Excellent]It's pretty light weight. I can easily move/carry the laptop around with one hand. I have fallen in love with the ultra light weight. This is truly a mobile laptop.-Temperature- 4/5 [Good]The exterior stays pretty cool. However, inside temperature gets really high. Under 100% load, the cpu easily hits 85C.The outside occasionally gets pretty hot, but in general, it keeps to a very comfortable temperature.-Battery Life- 4/5 [Good]I get about 2+ hours when running this laptop with 9/10 brightness + with everything on + none of that power saving stuff, with pidgin+firefox+thunderbird+Movie.-Wifi- 3/5 [Average]I have not had any problems with the wifi, but I spend most of my time on a landline. And I haven't had any connection issues on campus, or at my friend's homes.-Boot Time- [NA]Stock Boot Time - 55s to 70s.Stock Resume Time - 1s to 3s.Boot Time with SSD - 15s to 22sOther:-Minor Design Flaw! The majority of the ports are on the right side - including the power, hdmi, 2x USB. This makes it a bit hard to use your mouse when you have alot of stuff connected to your laptop - power, mouse, external harddrive. Unless you are left handed and have your mouse on the left side of the computer.Also this laptop does not come with a system recovery disk.*********************************************Now if you want to add your own SSD to this laptop - Or increase the amount of RAM.Any hardware modification to this laptop will void it's warranty.If you go to the Lenovo Forums and to this page: /t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-and-Z-series/New-U400-General/td-p/580903There is a thread on hardware modding this laptop and on page 2, there is a link to a Lenovo website with videos on how to take this laptop apart. Note that - Taking this laptop apart is VERY difficult and much harder than it seems in the video.***Note - The hard drive bay in the Lenovo U400 can not fit a traditional SSD and can only fit HDD. This is because a USB port intrudes upon the space for the Hard Drive and the traditional hard drive has a small space above the SATA and Power connectors where there isn't anything to obstruct - The SSD unfortunately has a lip.In order to fit a SSD - You pretty much only have three choices - 1. disassemble your SSD and tape it into to laptop. 2. disassemble your SSD and cut off a corner of it's case with a power tool. 3. Purchase a mSATA SSD and install that alongside your HDD. [I went with option 2] 4. Purchase a height 7mm SSD ex. samsung 830 (will still need to tape ssd).***Doing a clean install of Windows 7 did not work for me - Installing drivers became a nightmare. Recovery Disk can be used - Unfortunately your laptop doesn't come with one.***Upgrading RAMYou only have easy access to one of two Memory Slots. The second slot requires some serious hardware disassembly - included the removal of the entire motherboard.Luckily, the 2GB Memory Chip is on the side that is easy to access. However, having two separate memory chips from different companies on the same system may cause instability and occasional crashes. Which happened when I upgraded the stock 2GB Samsung to a 4GB Corsair.I would suggest purchasing a single 4GB Samsung stick of the same model as the one in the computer. It'll make your life easier.***How to take apart the laptop:Watch the Lenovo Support Videos.1. Take off two rubber feet - The ones in the back next to the monitor hinge. I used a flat head screwdriver with its head covered with a microfiber cloth (to prevent scratches) to pry the feet off.2. Unscrew two screws under the rubber feet.3. Pull the bottom cover towards the back of the laptop (back = where the monitor hinge is). You only need to pull it about 2mm. Gently lift the back of the bottom plate while pulling towards you. The back should pop out of the clips with some patience. Be careful not bend the part of the back of the bottom cover that bends up along side the monitor hinge.After releasing the back and side clips. While pulling the cover to slide it off, also lift the front of the back cover gently.-This part is the most difficult and I enlisted the help of a friend. I had my friend gently tap the front of the bottom cover with a hammer - on top of the back of a screw driver that was covered with some gauze pads.. While he was tapping, I gently pulled the front of the bottom cover away from the laptop.4. Once the cover is removed - the rest is self explanatory.5. Putting the cover back on. Put the cover back on with the front first. The rest of the clips should click into place as you push down. Afterwards, slide the bottom cover towards the front of the laptop. While pulling, screw the two screws back in. This part was easy and I was able to do it without enlisting help.-If you have trouble lining up the two screw holes - you may have bent the back of the bottom cover, you will have to bend them back into place with your hands or pry them back into place with a flat head screw driver.***Random Stuff:It took me about 4 hours to finish my hardware modifications the first time. I also made alot of mistakes and ended up with a few chips. My second and third time opening up the computer took me about 10 minutes each.Attempting to get the computer to work and install all the drivers with a clean OS install took me 8 hours and ultimately failed.Attempting to figure out how to clone the drive and after much google and tech forum searches as well as many failed clone attempts - took me about 10 hours. Cloning ultimately was successful.I experienced some hard drive hangs with the Corsair GT. I was able to fix this by updating the firmware on my SSD.Tools I used: Philips Screw Driver, Flat Screw Driver, Cloth (micro-weave cloth and a towel), Gauze pads, Hammer, Bench Grinder (Powertool).Extra Purchases: Acronis True Image Home 2012 $50, Corsair 120GB GT SSD $155, 1x DVD-R $-
1GREAT Laptop! ... for less than a year...
By TeeB
Follow up - So it's been almost a year since I got this laptop, and I would have to say...I have to change my original rating of a 5 to a 1 star. Over the period of time, my battery itself started to have problem, my laptop stopped staying cool, and I had issues with it twice. 1 of 2 times I had problem with it, I had to figure it out myself, because the customer service was just horrible. I mean the computer itself is still pretty good but the change to a one star is mainly because of the customer service. So basically, my laptop had a blue screen. Keep in mind, I keep my laptop in very good condition physically. I got my laptop sent in to the repair center and after 1 week, my repair status remained the same. I gave them a call, and I was told that I had water damage in my motherboard and I would have to pay $360+ some fee in order to fix my laptop. I told the rep that I never had water spilled on my laptop ever. She then mentioned that I had some water mark on my keyboard...I proceed to explain to her, I washed my keyboard with a very damped cloth before I sent my laptop for repair, and she tried to explain to me that might had been the problem. All in all, after speaking with a few other reps, I didn't get my problem solved. They insisted on me paying $360+ some fees I couldn't understand. Felt like I shoulda sticked with a brand I was more familiar with and listened to those who said the customer service was horrible. The laptop cost $600-700 bucks now for a new one, so I didn't even bother paying for the repair, hopefully I can retrieve my harddrive datas.-------------Original ReviewI had this laptop for about a few weeks now. I've been waiting for it to be available since it was announced. I'm sure a lot of buyers will want this laptop because it's basically a Window Macbook. And that is exactly what you get. I am also a mac owner, the quality is on par with Macbooks. This is a very pretty laptop and spec are pretty decent. On the pictures, the shade of silver looks very similar to the macbooks, but it actually a dark slate gray.Pros --Laptop stays cool. It vents from the side, I've had it on for 14 hours once and it was stayed very cool.-Chiclet keyboard feels really nice.-Glass trackpad is on par with macbooks.-Battery last around 6-7 hours.-Light weight.Cons --Don't really have any beside that I would had preferred an SSD option and Lenovo should make accessories for this laptop already! And I really wanted the Black/Clementine Orange color, but it's only available for the U300s.So basically if your looking for a nice looking laptop with decent spec, great battery life, light weight and stay cool, this is the laptop for you. Especially if your looking for a Macbook alternative.
5Pretty amazing laptop
By bwihl
This thing is pretty amazing!I needed a new laptop after having my previous one for 4 years. I love windows (not that I have anything against Mac OS, just don't prefer it), but I wanted something with the build quality of a mac book pro but a lower price tag. I was really considering getting a mbp, until I saw this laptop. If you are in the same boat as me, then this is the perfect laptop for you. All aluminum body, extremely sturdy look and feel, very sleek design, I would say it matches up perfectly with the mbp but at $300 less.The thing runs extremely fast. The 2nd generation mobile i series is catching up to the power of the desktop versions. I really don't notice a difference between this laptop and my i5 desktop tower as far as responsiveness. Trust me, performance is not an issue for this laptop. It can handle anything that you can throw at it (obviously that's an exaggeration, but anything reasonable that you can throw at a laptop it can do). It also runs very cool. mbps get hot, especially when setting them on your lap or on a cushioned surface. The cooling out the side and through the keyboard of this laptop makes it stay cool and keeps the bottom of the laptop from becoming a personal heater (which may not be a good thing if are use to using your laptop as one).The one area I would say the mbp beats this thing hands down is the screen. The screen on the u400 is 1200 x 768 and doesn't look as sharp and clear as the mbp's screen. I like running my screens at really high resolutions even though it's probably not great for my eyes. But it is only a 14 in screen and a higher resolution probably wouldn't make sense. Another small flaw that seems to be common is the screen not closing perfectly flush around the entire edge of the laptop. On the front right corner of mine there is about a 1 mm gap. I can see how this might bother someone. I am one of those people that has to have everything in mint condition and if I know somethings wrong, it bugs me. But for some reason, this doesn't bother me at all. Another aspect that brings up a lot of debate is the glass mouse pad. The u400s pad feels exactly like the mbp's. The only downfall is Windows. It doesn't have the nice soft, smooth scrolling and zooming, or the friction-less gliding scrolling that Mac OS does. It is a little choppier on Windows, but I can live with that (I also believe that Windows 8 does this better).Another problem for some people might be the amount of I/O it has. It has 1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, and HDMI, and an optical drive. Laptops are moving away from having PCI buses available and VGA outputs. Not having some of these things can be painful (I am a college student and not having a VGA out can be annoying since all my classes have VGA projectors. But this just requires me to get an HDMI to VGA converter, which is basically what mac users have to do). For me, the USBs are enough.In summary, if you want something that is sleek and powerful, regardless of your price range, then this is it. I really believe that spending more to get a mbp or one of the top sony vaios is not buying you a better laptop. I don't think anyone will regret owning this thing.
5A Solid Machine
By Kevin Seeley
It is important to note that I am reviewing the s6992 model ($899). The only real differences that I have noticed between this model and the more expensive model is the lack of a blu-ray drive and that there is no keyboard back-lighting. If these are important to you, then you should definitely get the most expensive model ($1099).I purchased this laptop about a week ago, through tiger direct, for college use after my ASUS had failed (major hardware issues). So far, I am very impressed. There are better lengthy reviews on this model already (see Mad B's for example), so I shall keep this brief.Pros: - Gaming: I am not an avid gamer, but it was important to me that my new rig could handle any new games that I would want to throw at it. To be clear, games on this machine run beautifully. The 230M is a true performer, and I had no problem playing Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 (demo) on this machine at max settings. I am confident that you would be able to play more demanding games with no problems. - Windows 7 : Loving it so far. I have had zero compatibility problems with my favorite programs, and if you are buying a new laptop, you may as well get one with the latest OS. - Full Keyboard : Just a nice feature to have, really. - Speakers : Great for just listening to music or watching a movie. These speakers are plenty loud and aren't tinny like most laptop speakers. (NOTE: There have been some reported problems with these speakers just not working suddenly. Before you assume it is a driver issue, turn off the laptop, take out the battery, and reinsert. This inexplicably seems to fix the problem. This has only happened to me once, but is a common issue with the A505 series.)Cons: - Battery Life : About 2 to 2.5 hours on a low power setting. If you are gaming, forget it. It is important to know this going in. If you don't like to have your laptop plugged into the wall most of the time, then you will want to look into some other options. If you are like me, and this is more of a desktop replacement, then no issue. - Finger Prints! : Don't get me wrong, this laptop is very attractive...just pre-use. I am constantly wiping this thing down with a micro-fiber cloth after use, to keep it shiny. Not really that big of a deal though.Overall, I'd give this a 9/10. If you can forgive the battery life and deal with the finger prints, you can enjoy a laptop that can handle itself pretty darn well.
4So far so good, with few drawbacks
By A. S. Hammad
I bought this machine last week to serve as my primary machine (desktop replacement)As a software developer, I usually care to have a powerful machine (at a suitable price), and I don't mind to play some network games from time to timeFirst of all, I got this machine from Amazon for only $850, so if it's out of Amazon's stock and you see it sold by another merchants at a higher price, you should wait till it's back to Amazon's stock, or go and buy it from Toshiba directly... You should never pay more than $900 anyway...PLEASE NOTE !!!! Another Toshiba machine with a higher screen resolution is available at the same price, it's only inconvenience is being bulky and heavy (model: P500-ST68X1), so if you really look for a desktop replacement and mobility is not so important for you, you should think about the P500-ST68X1Back to this machine, regarding to the pros, I think you can get most of it from the machine specs:1. 500GB HDD, 4GB DDR3... Should keep you running for at least 2 years2. 16" True Brite display... Pictures and movies Looks wonderful with TrueBrite3. Dedicated NVidia graphics memory rather that a shared memory Intel chipset... Should be very important for gamers. I havent tried it yet with gaming, but I think it will work great4. Windows 7 Home Premium: Haven t spent much yet testing it, but it looks more appealing that the stupid Vista... I was totally against the idea of migrating to Vista (after testing it with one of the workstations at work), however, Windows 7 looks much more mature to me than Vista... So, probably I'll keep it and wont downgrade the machine to XPOf course there are some cons, I agree with all described in other reviews, and I like to add the following:1. Be careful, screen resolution is only 1366x768... It looks great with movies and pictures, but if you like working at super high resolutions and you love to read tiny fonts (like me), this screen might be a bit disappointing for youMy other laptop is a Lenovo W500, offering a resolution of 1920x1200... So I miss the feeling of having this global view for my applicationsHowever to be honest, Truebrite still appears to be more vivid than Lenovo's2. Be careful, the 2 memory slots are already used, so you can only upgrade the laptop memory by replacing installed chips3. Be careful, 16" laptops will probably not fit in 15.4" cases, so you'll probably need to buy a new laptop case for this machine4. I totally agree that the machine comes loaded with lots of unnecessary software... I've already uninstalled lots of that5. I totally agree that the laptop finish although it appears very elegant, it's still very annoying when it comes to finger prints (they occur very easily, look very ugly, and you'll suffer to remove it)6. Socket loading CD-ROM, it looks fancy, but I feel it's somehow fragile (just a feeling)7. I still dont feel conformable with the touchpad (maybe it's a matter of time, but so far I cant have good control of it, even after changing its settings several times)Another important piece of info, according to Windows 7, this machine has an overall Windows Experience Index of 5.7, which is fair enoughConclusion:Good machine for all purposes, I don't regret buying it at all, it's just that you need to understand all cons very well and accept them, then probably you'll see that this is the best machine you can get within this price range if you look for mobility and power
3Toshiba Satellite A505-S6992 - good for consumers, 'OK' for the budget conscious technophile
By IT-Guru
I own this notebook for the past 4 weeks, and used it hard since then. I bought it at FRYS for 750 USD; at that price it's a good notebook, but at the MSRP of 900 USD it's merely average.The good:- 64bit edition of Windows 7- Bright LED Screen- ECOnomy mode- 4 GB of faster DDR3 RAM- 500 GB Harddrive- Nvidia Geforce GT230M videocard- Higher End Multimedia options & connectivity (Firewire, HDMI, eSATA)- sensitive WI-FI card with Draft N protocol- in-built Accelerometer that 'protects' the harddrive better versus data-loss when the netbook gets dropped or bumped- slot-loading DVD-burner - no accidentally breaking-off the DVD-tray- decent Audio-speaker that actually can be loud and do not loose their sound quality; to top it off, the Speakers are housed in their own vibration-padded casing.- OPTIONAL a 12-cell battery can be purchased separately at Toshiba, which becomes a necessity if you're on the go a lot.The bad- Battery Life - a standard 6-cell Battery- Battery Life (again - why? because the battery is dead after 1 hour when watching a movie, or playing a AAA-game)- slow harddrive (takes forever to boot-up from 'cold' state)- no Bluetooth- no inbuilt keyboard back light (so you can see and type in the 'dark')- comes pre-installed with a lot of "shovel-ware" (that is; installed software that's not needed because windows7 has them already integrated) that causes to prolong the boot-up process tremendously.- Toshiba deviating from the MXM-standard (Mobile PCI-Express Module) for mobile video-cards - that means, you cannot easily replace the 3D-video-card against a better/faster one, down the road, to prolong the value of your notebook- in-built Processor does NOT support Intel's VT - The ability to run hardware support for Virtual Machines (i.e. Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate)Quintessence:It's a decent system, if you get it for cheaper (as I did) than the MSRP. the Video-card is, as of time of writing, considered a "high performance" model, compared what's currently out there for laptops. The lack of BluRay drive I consider not a problem, since the 16-inch screen-size does not really require Hi-Def resolution. Speakers have a good sound, compared to other notebooks out there. What bugs me most is the Battery-Life, it's okay for "web surfing & word processing" (about 2 hours, 2.5 hours with the ECO-mode active), but if you're watching movies or playing AAA-rated games, the battery is dead in ~1 hour or less. It's highly recommended to purchase the optional 12-cell battery. What i miss the most - other than the battery life - is integrated Bluetooth (for wireless stereo headsets) and the keyboard not being back-lit (for better typing in low-light/dark). It needs to be noted that the Laptop has eSATA and HDMI connectivity, for high data-rate transfers with external harddrives or other devices, and for Hi-Def audo/video connectivity. the eSATA-port is also an USB-port at the same time, which allows to charge external devices (cellphones, MP3 players and such) while the notebook is in "sleep mode", but that is only feasible when the optional 12-cell battery is used/installed.What upsets me the most is that Toshiba deviates from the MXM industry standard of mobile video cards, which would allow to replace the video-card against a newer one to make the Notebook last longer in value - especially if you're a avid computer gamer. But for 90% of all consumers out there this is usually not much of concern.According to a recent survey, Toshiba and ASUS notebooks are currently the longest lasting one, whereas DELL and Hewlett-Packard notebooks have the shortest life cycles; which is also a reason why i bought this notebook.It's worth four stars at my purchase price, but only three stars at MSRP.Verdict:Buy it, if you get it for cheaper than the MSRP
1Horrible - dont buy it
By SC
I bought this during the labor day sale as it had a $100 rebate. Which was mailed 3 weeks ago but still hasn't made it to me.Right after the one month mark, first blue screen happened. I contacted Lenovo support who told me to uninstall McAfee, which i did. Was fine for a week. After that I blue screen at least few times a day, sucks because i use this as my work laptop. Called Lenovo who said they would look into it for a price, asked them if i could return and get a refund, they gave me a ticket number been over 2 weeks haven't heard back. Latest feature on the laptop is it keeps blinking on me as if the blue screen by itself wasn't annoying on its own. I've bought a few laptops this is by far the worst laptop i've ever bought. Wouldn't recommend for free, not worth the annoyance.
5I love it
By KyleeAnn
I bought this laptop 3 months ago specifically to run a CAD program for a couple of engineering courses I was taking. I've been very pleased in the laptop thus far. It came with a bunch of useless programs (what laptops don't) but I removed most the programs and it's working great. It runs my CAD program, SolidWorks 2011, perfectly. I haven't had any issues with it freezing or running slowly. It stays cool. The graphics are great. I have no complaints about its performance. I work IT and I game, so I know that it's not the best computer out there. It's great quality for the price I paid. I've always been really pleased with Lenovo and this isn't an exception. I'm very satisfied.Pros:PerformanceSoundGraphicsstays coolCons:The touchpad is a little weird, but I use a wireless mouse so it's not a huge con for me.Comes with too many useless programs.Really wish the keyboard had a back light.
1Don't be Fooled
By Srinivas Ravi
I have searched a lot of reviews for this model laptop. All over they gave very good review, so I bought it. But this is very slow and my old Dell is faster than the new one. I am talking about my Dell 3 years old and it is way faster than this Lenovo. Do not buy this not worth it.
4Great Ultraportable
By C. Crowder
Here is my review on the much anticipated new notebook from Acer, the Timeline 1830T-3927. This machine is a 11.6" ultraportable notebook equipped with the new Intel processor, the core i3-330um CPU, which is maufactured especially for smaller notebooks, 3 GB RAM and a 320 GB Hard Drive running on Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bitThis notebook just arrived from Amazon the other day and I have only been using it for a couple of days but since there are very few reviews thus far on the 1830T, I thought I'd write one.The overall build quality of this notebook seems to be very good, it is made of very tough light weight plastic and has a black matte finish on the outside which is very sharp. The HD screen is designed for 720p viewing and seems to have a very sharp and bright display, this resolution is of course ther best you can expect on a smaller 11.6 ultraportable. I have seen many displays on 11.6 models and I believe the 1830T has the best screen that I have seen. The keyboard on the 1830T does not seem to be full size as the typing experience is comfortable but somewhat cramped. The keys have a very nice feel and good feedback but I was disaapointed to discover that the keyboard has allot of flex and seems a bit flimsy, something I did not expect on a $599 notebook.( This is why I am giving the 1830T 4 stars instead of five.)In addition, the trackpad, although comfortable seems very small. The mouse buttons are excellent.The ports on this machine are very good with a nice selection, certainly all you will need on an ultraportable, of course there is not optical drive as Gateway is the only manufacturer I know of that is equipping an 11.6 notebook with a DVD drive.In addition to the excellent screen, the real strength of this notebook is the new and powerful Core i3-330um CPU. ( Note that there is an even more powerful model equipped with the Core i5 but it retails on Amazon for $699,a bit much to pay for an 11.6 ultraportable in my opinion.). The Core i3 on this machine seems very fast and responsive and seems to handle just about anything you throw at it. This CPU is noticably faster than the other Intel ultra low voltage processors currently on the market and certainly much faster than earlier Acer models like the 1410. With the new Core i3 CPU, you will lose a bit in battery time but the speed more than compensates for this. I expect the 1830T-3927 to last about 5 hours on a charge.Overall , this is one of the best, if not the best 11.6 ultraportables out there but you will have to pay a premium for it, mostly because of the new Intel processor. As I said, if not for the average keyboard, this notebook would be easily 5 stars.
4Great Laptop
By Joseph Caldwell
Pros:Thin, light, screen is bright and has good color, screen's high resolution makes up for its small size, processor is powerful enough for general use, doesn't get too hot, great battery life (6+ hours), great port selection, good keyboardCons:Touch-pad isn't well demarcated from the wrist rest making it too easy to drift into no man's land, the screen's vertical viewing angles could be betterOverall I really like this laptop. It boots quickly and has generally snappy performance. It isn't the fastest at some processor intensive tasks like compressing audio and video, but that's to be expected for a low voltage processor. For general use like web browsing and watching videos it is perfectly adequate. I'll gladly accept some reduced performance given that this laptop doesn't get nearly as hot as other laptops I have used and it has fantastic battery life. I can get over 6 hours with the wifi on and the screen set to half brightness.The screen looks nice, has a good resolution, and isn't too reflective. The vertical viewing angles, however, aren't the best but they are hardly prohibitive to use. Probably the most annoying thing about this laptop is the touch-pad. It's not terrible; I just wish it was easier to tell by feel when you have left the touch sensitive area. Not a deal breaker, but annoying nonetheless. Fortunately the keyboard is great. It isn't missing any important keys and is comfortable to use. I also really like the large port selection for such a small laptop. I've had larger laptops that had only two USB ports.The thing I like most about this laptop is its portability. After owning a couple of big and bulky laptops over the years, it's fantastic to carry around this little machine. If you are looking for a solid ultra-portable laptop, you won't be disappointed with this one.
4Powerful and Easy to Carry
By FFDR
To me this ACER ASPIRE laptop is the perfect computer for travel. It offers a great compromise between the need to carry it around on one hand and the speed/CPU power on the other. The laptop is only slightly larger and heavier than the 10" netbooks with the Intel Atom processor. In return it offers the new core-i processor which puts it on a different planet in terms of computing power. I have been using it for a couple of days now, and I am generally very pleased with it performance.What I like:- Small dimensions and weight make it easy to carry.- Very powerful given the size.- Sturdy built, seems solid and durable.- Responsive keyboard with very large keys.What I do NOT like:- The mouse touchpad. It has a rather rough and sticky surface which makes it rather challenging to use. This compounds the problem that the touchpad is quite small. I would have preferred to have the keyboard downsized to generate more space for the mouse.- The HOME and END keys can only be reached through the FN key. Not a big deal, but I happen to use them quite frequently, and there would obviously been enough space for two extra keys (and a larger tochpad).I cannot help closing with a bit of a rant: I absolutely HATE WIDESCREENS. I would certainly not have bought this computer if there had been a suitable alternative with a 4:3 ratio screen, even for a considerably higher price. Unless the computer is used exclusively for watching movies, a widescreen of this size has only disadvantages. When browsing the web or editing documents, it makes me feel like standing in a room with a ceiling 4 inches below my height (this last point is not included in my ranking as all competing models would have the same problem).
