Excellent speed and quality

I purchased this Dell XPS XPS13-9001sLV with i7 1.7 GHz processor, 4GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD about two weeks ago after a thorough search of the available reviews and spending several hours in the local Best Buy and MCX electronics section. I also looked at the Samsung, Sony, Asus, and Toshiba ultrabooks and with both i5 and i7 processors as well as briefly at the MacBook Air. I found generally that the ultrabooks were all competent players, each with one small thing the others lacked; usually in the form or function of video outputs or number of USB 3.0 ports. For my work, I needed a Windows 7 platform. I have been running Ubuntu for the past two years because I couldnt stand how slow my old laptop with Windows XP had become. Recently the online tools I use switched to exclusively MS Internet Explorer which necessitated the purchase of a new machine. In choosing the XPS it was a tradeoff in some capabilities (processor series and speed) and some quantity and type of outputs (1 USB3, 1 USB2, 1 mini Video, NO SDHC card reader) in order to have a smaller, lighter, more rigid, and potentially longer lasting device. I have been extremely pleased with the operating speed of the XPS 13. In practical terms, the XPS boots from a cold start into Windows 7 in 12-13 seconds and boots into Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in 11-17 seconds. Additionally, it performs as advertised in its ability to wake from hibernation in 2-3 seconds and from a rest in about a second. Download and internet operating speeds are also excellent, and the fastest I've seen in any computer. My newest U.S. Govt. HP loads most sites like Hotmail or Facebook in 5-7 seconds, but the little XPS will do it in 1-2. I have downloaded several large files and installs and have been happy with the performance of the machine during sustained downloads as well. When it comes to battery life I knew I was giving something up to get an ultrabook, but in practical usage it has been a pleasant surprise that I can get 3.5 hours out of a charge running Windows 7, surfing the net, downloading and running an external drive. In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS it is even more efficient pulling 4-5 hours, even while charging my phone. The screen is bright and clear and quite large for such a small machine. Although perhaps not as hi-def as a full retina display, it is much more than DVD quality and plenty big enough. It provides a crisp image throughout and didn't display any tendencies towards motion tracking or blurring when I played a DVD. The case is perhaps the most attractive part of the machine, but it also functions superbly as a stiff, light and durable frame. The little XPS is significantly stronger than any other laptop I have used, including my wife's MacBook Pro17. The XPS doesn't display any flex in the keyboard or hinge wobble. Competitive MacBook replacement for the Windows/Ubuntu person

This ultrabook has similar size, weight and appearance to a MacBook Air 13, running Windows 7 (upgradable to Windows 8). It is possible to create a special partition in the 256M SSD drive and install Ubuntu.The computer runs smoothly and fast.The cons: Screen resolution is 1366 x 768. It could be better. Like the MacBook Air, the machine has only 2 USB ports, no ethernet port and a mini-DVI port to connect an external display. Unlike the MacBook air it does not have an SD card reader.The pos: Very fast SSD and quad i7 processor. Very robust construction and light weight. Keyboard is large, illuminated and agreeable to use.

Wanted to love it....it didn't perform

I bought this early on (March, 2012) and REALLY wanted to love it. Weight and form factor are EXCELLENT.Sadly, it's just not all that. Screen was so so. Speed felt sluggish, even coming out of sleep wasn't great. It had a wonky track pad as well.It went back. My search for a next generation laptop continues.

my favorite toy

I haven't had a laptop in quite some time. I was looking for a lightweight laptop to surf the internet on as I relax at night. I love this pc. It is lightweight and the wireless connection is flawless. I bought a lap desk so the heat from the bottom of the unit wouldn't burn my lap... turns out I don't even need it. The bottom this pc stays nice and cool. I am so impressed that I'm planning on buying another one for my mother.

Huge bang for the buck, with caveats

First off, let's just get this out there: paper spec-wise, few other laptops can compare to this laptop in my opinion. Laptops with 15" 1080p IPS screens are very few and far between, and then weighing just 4 pounds and being very thin is icing on the cake. The rest of the system is pretty average for this price range nowadays, but if you haven't experienced a screen like this you might just not realize how big of an asset it truly is.Now, the caveats: the first sample I got had a rattly fan. It was very noticeable, and made me worry that it might break after a short amount of time. Wanting my laptop to last more than a few weeks, I returned it and got another which was quick and painless, but it definitely did not inspire confidence in Vizio's build quality. My second CT15-A1 is fine, but I'm strongly considering the 3 year aftermarket warranty that Amazon offers just in case it has problems down the line. Not only is this laptop priced very aggressively, but Vizio is brand new to the laptop space, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect some growing pains with early models. Subjectively, the laptop feels like it's actually built very well. The aluminum body is stiff, and there's very little screen flex. The screen hinge is stiff without being too stiff. There are no obvious build quality defects like bumps under the keyboard or that kind of thing (which I had with my previous Dell XPS M1330).With that out of the way, I do have to say that I truly love this laptop. It's crazy lightweight for the specs. The matte 1080p IPS screen is beautiful, and when calibrated with my X-Rite i1 Display 2 (using the Lacie Blue Eye software), the average dE is less than 0.2. Read: this display is capable of near perfect reference color reproduction. I can do Adobe Lightroom work on this laptop without color reproduction concerns any more, in fact I moved away from a separate monitor to save space on my desk and for a little extra cash.The keyboard is very nice tactile-wise. Before I got this laptop, I was using a mechanical keyboard with Cherry Blue switches. So I definitely appreciate the benefits of a nice keyboard. And while the keys aren't the same as a mechanical keyboards', they're still nice. The travel is pretty limited but there's good feedback. It's not too loud but also isn't silent. Everything's laid out pretty nice, although I'm not a fan of the arrow key setup and I hate the complete lack of home/end/pgup/pgdown navigation keys. I think the default option of the F1-12 keys acting as special function keys without needing to hold fn is an excellent decision. I only ever used F5 for refreshing a page, which can be accomplished by ctrl-r, but on the other hand I need volume, playback, and brightness control very often. One thing I have noticed that could be a problem: sometimes it seems like key presses aren't noticed, and other times it seems like I unintentionally double press a key. I'm a very fast typer (about 90 words per minute on a 1 minute test), so it could be that I'm just being really inaccurate with a new keyboard, but if you're concerned about this I would check for a trend in other reviews.The touchpad is okay at best, and if it's having a bad day it's absolutely terrible. This is my first multi-touch touchpad, so my experience here should be noted as very limited overall. I like the gestures, and scrolling usually works pretty well. I really like that the entire touchpad clicks in for a left click - no more need to keep my left hand on the click button. I dislike that the default option for touch to click is "on". This was an amazingly stupid decision that wreaks of limited to no end-user testing. It makes typing almost impossible because there's no palm detection and merely brushing the pad moves your cursor. But thankfully this can be turned off, and as I mentioned previously the push-in-entire-pad-to-click design makes it unnecessary anyway. As another reviewer mentioned, sometimes the touchpad decides to just take a break and turn off. Other times, it decides to get all coked out and just randomly go around the screen, in no clear relation to what I'm actually trying to do. I'm not exaggerating. It's just completely broken in that respect. I have the most recent drivers and occasionally this happens with just no warning at all. It's infrequent enough that it's not critical, but it's pretty pathetic. Finally, it should be noted that there's no off button for the pad. I feel this is OK with touch to click being set off, since then the pad shouldn't randomly click unless you have a habit of bending your wrist to go between your hands and pressing down pretty stiffly, but it's still something some users might be concerned about.So, basically, plan on using a trackball or a mouse with this laptop.The ports are a little limited. Just two USB ports and only HDMI kind of sucks. Lots of projectors are still behind the curve and only have VGA, but the D-Sub connector is huge so I can't blame VIZIO for leaving it out.The headphone audio is really nice. I would consider myself a practical audiophile - I don't believe in $500 power cable snake oil, but I appreciate a good DAC and good pair of cans. In that regard, the audio from this VIZIO is pretty respectable. There's none of the hissing that you get with truly awful DAC/amp combos, but it's also nothing to write home about and the gain is pretty low. Shouldn't be a problem unless you're planning on driving expensive high impedance cans, in which case you're probably the type of person to have an external DAC/amp combo anyway.Also, cool feature sidenote: like smartphones, the laptop detects when headphones are plugged in, and it remembers the difference between last speaker volume and last headphone volume. So otherwise, you can have the speaker volume set to muted but the headphone volume set to average so you won't disturb anyone but still not have to mess with the volume constantly.Finally, the OS experience is very nice. Turning on from standby is instantaneous. Turning on from hibernate isn't blazing fast but still only about 20 or 30 seconds. Turning on from being completely off or restarting takes about probably only 15 or 20 seconds. Not having bloatware is a godsend. This is the first prebuilt I've ever bought where I didn't do a Windows fresh install first thing. I just uninstalled the Bing and Zune crap and I was good to go 30 seconds later. Also, as a sidenote, there aren't ridiculous brand stickers plastered all over the place. The CT15 has a great design that's very nice to look at, and they obviously cared more about the user experience than absurd brand identity/advertising when they were designing it.Final geek note: I haven't tried yet, but I see any kind of hardware changes being difficult or impossible. The entire underside of the laptop is a single piece, so there's no easy-to-access hard drive, RAM, etc. doors. This is frustrating, especially since I'd like to drop in a 512GB SSD in a few months since the prices keep dropping and 128GB is a little small, but I would research into this more if you're considering the laptop and need this capability.Anyway, to summarize, this is an amazing laptop for the price. The screen is superb, and doesn't even require a "for the price" qualifier. Everything else is pretty average, with nothing being terrible except the touchpad depending on how much you plan on using it and if you're OK with messing with the settings (very easy to do). The internals are nice, but you might not be able to change them (research this if it matters to you). It's indeed very thin and light, and again at a great price. I recommend it, but consider the quality control risks before buying., and if you're willing to also carry around a mouse or a trackball.Really I would have given this laptop a -1 star for the touchpad, and -0.5 stars for the one I had to replace. But since you can't do out of 10 ratings, I think a 4 is more appropriate because the rest of the laptop is good and the screen is greaet.

Beauty is skin deep

I do purchase lots of laptops each year, as I have a nag for trying new tech.But I like to think that I am in constant search for the perfect gadget and never finding it (be it a laptop, a tablet, a phone, a remote control...)And let me tell you, I have never been torn by a product as much as I did with Vizio CT15-A1The laptop is gorgeous, the screen is amazing, and the build quality is superb. But there are some serious short comings.I had the laptop for nearly a month now, and I stil feel this love and hate realtionship. I can't make up mind wether to keep it or ditch it for another laptop. (either way, in few months, a new laptop must fill its shoes, especially with Win8 on the way)What I love about the laptop:* Looks space-age. And I don't mean like a Macbook Air does (althoug the similarities are stunning), it is the angular design of the screen lid, and above all, the grayish hue on the body.* Excellent construction, with very useful rubber bottom.* Amazing IPS full-HD matte display* Cool charger ligths (abit too bright)What I hate about the laptop:* The touchpad* The touchpad* The touchpad (yes, that much!) of all the laptops I ever used, no touchpad ever came close to the horride experience of this laptop; gestures are erratic, touch sensitivity is horrible, and above all, the touchpad always ignore any minute gesture: to stick the pointer over something small, you must first swipe hard to get the cursor moving and then quickly set the cursor where you want... an exercise in patience.* Short battery life: while doing nothing but surfing the web, I get about 4 hours.* Keyboard is not likeable, but in reality is not as bad as other users have described. and of course, it is not backlit. It would not register some keys if very lightly pressed.* Should not really be called an ultrabook, because it does not standby as other laptops do: if you simply close the lid, the laptop goes on standby, not the deep sleep mode. So in few hours, battery would have dropped by about 20%, and then it goes into hibernate. So, first you are faced with unexpeted reduction in battery, second, you have to wait for the laptop to resume from hibernation, which BTW takes longer than a full boot.* There is a 2GB hibernation partition, which is weird given the laptop has 4GB of memory, so I think it is useless and unused (which might be the cause for the behavior above)* Recovery partition is there, but there is no way to extract it on Media, and, you must boot windows in recovery mode to be able to access it. pretty useless if your main parition is corrupt (which is at times why you would like to do recovery in the first place). It is a weird decision to do this, and maybe it is justified by the fact that the hard drive is not meant to be user replacebale. Or maybe such decision reflects Vizio's inexperience in the PC business world.* Charger is standard size (which is to say big), which is a shame given how beatifully designed the laptop is, and since battery life sucks, leaving the charger behind is not something you would want to do.You can see how many shortcomings there are, and yet I cannot hate the laptop... that should be an indication how beautiful the laptop is :) Beauty is skin deep? yeah, but it got me!

Great Ultrabook with a huge BUT

It's a great ultrabook at an approachable price - if you use an external mouse. The included Sentelic "Finger Sensing Pad" and their drivers is the biggest piece of [...]. If you don't mind your touchpad behaving like it's drunk 75% of the time and sometimes just freezing for a minute or so, this computer is easily 5 stars. I would pay Vizio extra just to switch out this touchpad for a different manufacturer (that's what Asus did with their Zenbooks - they switched to Elan).Update: I got used to the touchpad... slightly. I still think it's bad, but I edited down my review a bit.

Great laptop

I had some issues when watching streaming video the ATI graphic card would get a error message then crash. Updated Video drivers and BIOS. now works perfectly ..This laptop does get very warm So I recommended getting Zalman-ZM-NC3000U cooler.upgraded the keyboard to backlit type myself. Great Escape Machine

I purchased my Studio as a game machine. I made it to retirement and felt I deserved a state of the art toy. I swore I would never again be chained to a desk, but still wanted a screen large enough I could read from it without my glasses. My Studio with its 8 gigs of ram (probably overkill) sails through the graphics on all the naval and railroad simulations that really put the hurt on other machines I've owned or used. I once swore by MacIntosh but, owning one and working with them in schools for years, I found reliability wise, they burned a lot of drives and crashed more often than anything except a PC running Windows ME. For a time they sure used top quality plastic which might be one of the reasons they cost so much. Following the advice of a computer teacher, I switched over to Dell for home. I could use it not only as a workhorse, but I could play games with it. I would leave it on for weeks at a time. Since then our family has destroyed two expensive HP laptops, and I have an IBM on the ropes. The old 2001 Dell still works as does a five year old 15" Inspiron, a four year old e1705, a disposable Latitude bought for an emergency which ran so well I decided to keep it and still use it. All our Dells have their original keys and all continue to be reliable. So purchasing the Studio with its fast i7 processor was easy to justify. I opted for slightly better graphics instead of the touch screen. After wiping off my iPod Touch countless times each day, I am glad I have no reason to smear the Studio's screen. I like the back-lit keys, their smooth, quiet operation, and the numeric keypad. I've seen other brands rise and fall in quality and reliability over the years, but hope this Dell Studio lives up to the standards my older Dells have set. I am not quite ready to submit it to the drop test all our other Dell laptops have survived.

Powerful but iffy laptop

I Purchased this Laptop about 3 days ago and was quite pleased with the performance at first. However, After being on for about 4 hours one day it would load web pages very slowly,and about an hour after that I was flashed with a blue screen before the laptop automatically shut down. I'm slightly more computer proficient than the average person so I was able to ascertain that the cause was an overheat, and that it was not uncommon for this particular laptop. Other than the need for a more powerful cooling fan this laptop is decent for the price, but you might wanna spend the extra $100-200 and buy a similar Toshiba or Asus.

Great Ultrabook with all the bells and whistles

I ordered this Ultrabook a few weeks ago and received it on Thursday and I must say it was exactly what I hoped it would be. I currently have a HP Elitebook 8440w which was around $1600+ and my wife has a Macbook Pro and the new Mac Air.I am very disappointed with the HP, slow, bad keyboard, not stylish, and wanted a slim, sexy laptop with long battery life but one that also has an optical drive (yes, it has been a while since I last used it but I miss it when it is not there)and although my wife wants me to get a Mac I was looking for a Windows based system.Then I saw a review online about this Acer M5 and it was giving it high praises and firmly recommended it. I was worried that it would be a cheap machine and was not very familiar with ACER but the video in the review showed the product clearly and I bought it at Amazon.OK, the product looks very nice, it might not have the metal housing of a Mac but there is zero flex with the screen, the keyboard or the body in general. The screen is big but very thin and the graphics are great. The touch pad is huge but I feel that it could be more responsive but I have not yet fiddled with the settings. I read the review about the keyboard and was surprised. It looks like an Apple Air keyboard, the chiclet style, only that the individual keys are slightly further apart. After the first few hours of typing I had no complaints and the back-lit option is great!The power key is at the front, and yes, this might not be ideal but as it is below the edge it is not actually sticking out and for somebody to accidentally push it, well, I will try it but it seems rather unusual that this could happen unless you try to throw the laptop like a discus at the Olympics.So far everything is excellent, there was a small hot spot on the bottom of the machine but nothing to get me excited.I will keep you guys updated but so far it is a slick machine with all the bells and whistles, looks great and I clocked almost seven hours battery time whilst surfing the net and playing around with the settings.Right now, I am a happy customer!!

Great computer so far

I am a certified computer tech and I have lots of experience with gadgets and computers. I replaced a 5 year old sony viao laptop with the acer aspire timeline U because of the specs of the machine. I was looking for a lightweight computer with a dvd drive and the abiity to play computer games such as Portotype 2 and Skyrim. There are areas where compromises must be made in order to save weight and cost. These cuts are ususally in the optical drive and a powerful video card.First of all, I think the keyboard is perfectly fine. It is backlit and I have not had any problems typing on it. It is solid and responsive. To each his or her own with regards to keyboards, but there are worse out there.This machine has a Nvidia 640M with a dedicated 1gb of memory. SO far, the laptop has been able to play all of the games that I have thown at it. While it is not considered a "gaming laptop" I am able to play Prototype II and Just Cause II on it with no lag. I usually try for the highest frame rate that looks good. This laptop has had no problems with medium/ high to hig res settings. I don't go all nuts with frame rate counters, I just know if it looks good when played. Is it smooth with little distortion? Yes. Is it jaggy or lags? So far, the answer has been no. It has really met my expectations.The only drawback to this laptop so far has been the screen resolution itself. It is not as high as some similar laptop models, however, there is a big difference in price for those machines. After having used this laptop for a few weeks, I beleive it is a small compromise that I can live with.The price war right, the size is right, the battery is right, the ability to play games and not have to haul around a 9-10 lb laptop is awesome!There is not much room for upgrading. There are no access panels on the bottom of the machine to easily upgrade items such as memory or hard drive. I believe the most ram this computer is capable of handling is 6gb ram and I am already at that.. There are ways to open the case, but it is not for the faint of heart.If you are looking for a sturdy laptop, that is thin and realtively light that can do a good job of playing games and has an optical drive all for less that $850. I would highly recommend this one.Just my 2 cents.

Best 15'' Ultrabook ever

I use this Laptop since 3 weeks and its the best laptop/Ultrabook ever.Its for 15" really small and the performance is very good.For me as a student is it the best compromise between high performance(also for gaming), big screen and portability.The battery is with up to 6 hours very good and it brings you through a whole day without energy.

Great laptop! What fan noise?

I don't know what some of these reviewers are talking about. On my laptop the fan is very quiet and the laptop stays relatively cool compared to my old laptop which would burn my lap when I used it. Very good build quality, with the exception of the disc drive, which does indeed feel a little cheap and easy to break as mentioned in previous reviews. Otherwise, this laptop is great and has more than decent power as long as you don't expect to play the latest games, in which case you would really need to get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

I purchased this laptop a month ago and don't hear the noise they are talking about. I purchased my first HP 17.3 about 3 years ago and love them both. I really like the I5 processor and the 6 gb. Great product for the price.
