Yeah, This Vaio doen't disappoint me at all

This is Third time that I choose Vaip Laptop.Sony's Gesture recogniton camera is unique and fun.Perfomance is good. LCD screen is birght enought and color is Clear. Almost ipad's quality.Touchpad is very comfortable, keyboard feeling is more smooth than desktop's.My second vaio laptop had wireless problem, but this one has no problem.Vaio is Good and this laptop is really good.

fast, Good looking , Cheep

I was skeptical at first, so I bought a Samsung i7 laptop instead. The Samsung, like most of the other laptops looked plain and outdated. The deal killer was the fact that its i7 was mystifyingly slow, so i took it back and gave the Sony a try! I was immediately impressed by the Vaio i5's speed, it is clocked at 2.5GHZ with speed boost up to 3.1GHZ so it just zipped to my tasks. The screen is bright and clear as you would expect from Sony. The battery is very good and i can go all day at school without a recharge. The diamond texture repels fingerprints, so it always looks clean. it has the Vaio Gate that livens up the windows 7 desktop. I also own a Sony Playstation 3 and this laptop features remote play so i can play PS3 games or access my PS3 from anywhere. The WIFI is fine if you update the drivers from Intel. My only complaint is the video camera isn't the best. I have looked hard after buying this computer and I cant find anything at this price that can meet all of my needs with the speed and style of this Vaio.

Great Feel - Lousy WiFi!

After my Macbook Pro gave out, I really wanted another computer with great color and visual as well as the easy feel of the Mac. The Vaio was very sleek and light weight. It had an interesting diamond finish that didn't show fingerprints too much but still looked good. The keyboard was comfortable and soft to the touch - it could really use a back light at night though, very hard to see. Start-up was very easy, the computer booted extremely quickly. There wasn't too much bloatware but it was easily removed in just a few minutes.Unfortunately, the Vaio has one major drawback. The wifi is very erratic. It would find our network and then for no reason drop the network. Many times I would have to go into the network settings and cancel and resubmit the connection. Sometimes this would work, sometimes, I would wait 3-4 minutes for it to reconnect. I downloaded and installed over 28 updates from Microsoft for Windows 7, none made any substantial difference. My husband upgraded our router at the house, no difference. I contacted Sony who told me to contact Intel and I went round and round. Nothing made any difference in the performance of this computer's wireless abilities. We have many other devices at our home on the wireless, including 2 Macs, a Dell laptop, Kindle, iPods, and iPad. The only one that has ever had any issue with the wireless was the Sony Vaio. In searching the net, I found many references to this problem, many dating back up to two years ago. Until, Sony can solve this issue, I would suggest avoiding this particular model.

Dell XPS 15 Z - Worth the buy!

The Dell XPS 15z breathes a fresh lease of life in the way we view images and work seamlessly without having to worry on the performance. As a photographer, I was looking at a "future proof" laptop which would justify my penchant for CS4 apart from the other programs which work in parallel. After 3 months of research, I ended up buying this one. The images spring into life thanks to the excellent resolution, the design of the laptop is simple yet evokes power.A very good buy!

Like a lot except for screen reflections

Mostly it is a great laptop. Fast, good screen resolution- it works well.It does have a few problems.The worst problem is that it has horrible reflections from its high gloss screen.It's a constant problem juggling the screen angle. Fortunately I canturn the screen brightness up a lot which helps some, but drainsthe battery much more quickly. Dell offered some laptops withoptional no-glare screens, but not this one.A minor nit- the CD eject button is on the keyboard and is often ignored by thesystem- it may not really be worse than the button on the cd itself, but itseems worse. I don't like this kind of drive- I would rather have a tray thatpops out instead of a slot.A bigger problem- the battery can't be swapped at the airport - it takes disassembly.And for me who wants to dual boot Linux- the newer Linux versions get snarled upwith the dual video chip thing and the screen goes dark. Also the touch padis not recognized by some versions.In all other respects it is a great laptop- the heat is less than many otherhigh performance units, the speed is excellent, the auto screen brightness workswell enough, the built-in wifi works well, the built-in bluetooth is goodand I carry a portable bluetooth mouse which is great. The unit is quite thin though heavy-ish.I love the 1920x1080 screen, though I would like 1920x1200 more.DELL: stop listening to yourselves and hear the customers: 1920x1200 and no glare.And this customer wants Linux drivers!

Stupendous and Powerful Laptop

The ASUS A55VD-AB71 is simply overall an EXCELLENT laptop once you get past one or two minor inconveniences. I bought this to replace my one year old Gateway NV55S04u 15.6-Inch Laptop that I also got from Amazon in 2011. My personal policy is to replace laptops within two years of usage but after seeing this ASUS A55VD and the specs it had I decided to break my custom and make it a one year deal. This is my very first time purchasing an ASUS product as I was skeptical about the brand at first since the name is never really mentioned in regular advertising campaigns in comparison to its rivals such as Acer, Gateway, HP-Compaq, Dell, etc. I have only had it for roughly a week but so far so good.The good parts about the ASUS A55VD are the blazing fast Core i7 processor, the large 750GB hard drive and the IceCool Palm Rest. I was a little perturbed when I saw that the hard drive was split into two parts, a C: drive and a D: drive; the latter being for data only. While I understand this is for protective means in case of data loss or corruption I didn't find it necessary in my case since I don't believe in filling up laptop hard drive spaces as it causes eventual slowdowns. That being said I used the Windows 7 in-built Computer Management tool to merge the partitions together. I prefer it that way overall.The memory of 6GB that it came with normally would be sufficient for the average user in conjunction with the Core i7 processor but my personal rule of thumb is to ALWAYS max out computer memory....or get as close to the maximum as one can comfortably afford so I purchased the Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9) kit at the same time and installed it. The system works like a dream no matter what task you "ask" it to do with this boost.I usually have the laptop on for 8 or more hours plugged in a day so far and the heat levels are pretty moderate. I can keep it on my lap for quite some time and it doesn't get noticeably hot at all. Even at the bottom of it so kudos to ASUS for an excellent dissipating design. The lower right side of the laptop adjacent to the touchpad does get slightly warm when it's on for several hours but it's not enough to be an issue of discomfort for the right hand when resting on it.There were two things I were disappointed with however - the volume of the Realtek HD in-built speakers and the hybrid graphics of Intel HD4000/Nvidia 610M. Firstly, the speakers were allegedly to be Altec Lansing according to the info on the Amazon website but that is not the case. The speakers also sound so low even at their maximum that you'd swear something was wrong with your hearing and that you were prematurely going deaf. Even with adjustments made with the Realtek HD Audio Manager the sound increase was next to negligible. Thankfully, however, my years of gained pc skills reminded me that I could use external software to enhance the sound quality. For all those interested you can purchase DFX Audio Enhancer and SRS Audio Essentials. The combination of both have my volume levels for both music and movies operating at desired output levels....as far as laptops go at any rate.Secondly, in regards to the graphics card, in no way was it mentioned on the Amazon site that the graphics would be a combination of Intel HD4000 and Nvidia 610M. It only lists the Nvidia. This disappointed me as I prefer dedicated graphics over embedded ones since the latter eats up part of the ram. Fortunately it seems to only consume 115MB of my 8GB ram. This isn't a deal breaker by any means BUT buyers should always know EXACTLY what they are getting before making a purchase. I will accept no excuse in regards to this from Amazon or ASUS.Overall the ASUS A55VD-AB71 is a raging beast of a laptop. Just keep in mind that some tinkering has to be done to get it to perform at the optimum levels most enthusiasts and/or gamers are looking for when making a purchase of $700 to $900. Personally I got it at $729 which for a laptop this powerful is a real bargain.UPDATE December 7, 2012: I decided to test the waters after doing some searches online about it and put in two sticks of 8gb each Corsair 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory CMSO16GX3M2A1600C11 and they took. The ASUS A55VD-AB71's Intel Core i7-processor and chipset can take 16GB of ram as indicated on the Intel website DESPITE the fact the ASUS website says a MAXIMUM of 8GB only. COMPLETELY INCORRECT!!! This will be a welcome update to those who are music, video and graphic artist professionals. I am loving this laptop more and more now.

Disappointed Asus lover

I have several Asus products and have always been happy and satisfied with them...until now. The touchpad jumps around, the Asus power manager interferes constantly regardless of the settings, video only wants to run on the internal graphics (one reason I bought it was for the external graphics) once it hibernates it locks up, sometimes to the point the battery needs pulled.I sent it in for warranty and they received it 10/31. I got it back 11/27. They kept saying parts were on order. The laptop actually broke about 10/15 but it took about 2 weeks to get the paperwork all in order to their liking. Let me tell you, save every scrap you can showing where it was bought and when. They try every trick possible to deny warranty. First they wouldnt recognize Amazon as a retailer, then the receipt didn't have the correct info, then the serial number wasn't in the system, then no one could find any records. Each time takes a day, then you have to call back for a 30min hold.Since I got the laptop back, it still does the software quirks but I have adapted myself to them. If this is the quality Asus now makes, I am very disappointed. I guess they will slap their label on anything to make a buck.

Excellent battery life, power and size for the price.

**Initial Ruminations**I only had a few, meagre requirements when purchasing a new laptop/netbook...It must be:1) Compact and lightweight2) Excellent battery life3) Powerful enough for photo/graphic editing, and programming IDE's4) Low costThe line between netbooks and laptops is quite blurred these days. The only real difference between a netbook and a laptop is usually if it has an optical media device (such as a DVD burner/drive). I never use optical media these days so that is not an issue for me.This net/lap/ultra book blurs the line completely; call it what you like. I would consider it to be a laptop since it has 4 gigs of ram (upgradeable to 8). Maybe it is really a lower end ultrabook.Regardless,there are not too many laptops/netbooks that fit my needs as specified above! In order to get a small, powerful laptop you generally have to pay out the wazoo for an ultrabook. Not any more, the Sony Vaio E2-1800 fits the bill perfectly!**Stock Windows Benchmark**I took a snip of the Windows Experience Index:[...]Most bloatware was disabled when I ran this. I am currently trying to unlock the BIOS which could help the processor speed if I can overclock it a bit. I would like to upgrade to 8 gigs of RAM but it will probably be bottle necked by the CPU.I should mention I have the Canadian version of this - it is for all intents and purposes identical but it has a slightly larger battery (for up to 7.5 hours of use) and larger hard drive.**Real-life Usage/Features**I can run jdownloader, browse the web with many tabs open, run photoshop, watch a movie with no lag at all.**Look and Feel**The tactile feel of the keyboard soft and quiet, feels well built overall.Another plus is the "gesture" touch pad... I don't need to use the touchpad mouse buttons at all.The white colour is a glossy, sparkly white on the outside. The screen bezel is glossy black. The screen is glossy. The keyboard, touch pad and keys are silvery white with chrome accents. The sides and bottom are black.**Integrated Peripherals**The webcam seems to be a generic quality laptop cam, but with HD resolutions. With the bundled software the picture rez goes to 2560x2048 and has a digital zoom. The video goes to 1280 x 1024.It's got a bunch of software features for the webcam including the "Gesture Control": if you use Media Gallery you can wave your hand in the air to change songs, pause adjust volume and what not, kind of like a remote. This works poorly in the dark even when your hand is visible. Seems mostly gimmicky but it's kind of a neat idea. It also comes bundled with lots of (optional) cloud software to organize your media, and the camera has various "face-tracking" abilities (Sony calls it an "Exmor Sensor" camera) along with plenty of ways to use this (ie. making an avatar move with your facial movements). I don't know if these features are common to most webcams, as I don't know much about them. The actual picture in low-light mode is quite good compared to my past laptops.**Speaker Quality**For a netbook / laptop the sound is what you would expect, no bass, however it goes much louder than other laptops I have had. Quote from Sony "xLoud technology enhances speaker volume without sacrificing quality.". I am sure if you left it cranked up it would affect the battery life quite a bit. It's nice to have the option of loud sound though, in case you want to watch a movie or stream music for friends.**Conclusion**This little 'book packs a punch in a small package. It may be even better if I can unlock the BIOS and give it more juice. However, even at stock it is a light weight solution, packs a bit of oomph without sacrificing battery life, so if this is what you are looking for don't hesitate to try it out!

A terrific laptop

There's a lot to love about this little bugger.First of all, it's light and small. It's just large enough to be comfortable to type on.I'm a big fan of AMD, a company local to me where several of friends work, but I admit their chips are not at quite at level Intel's are for raw performance. This is not the most powerful laptop, but it is snappy for web surfing and decodes h.264 basically instantly. For Netflix, web surfing, document editing, and other every day uses, this laptop is up to the task.For games, I found the framerates surprisingly pretty good for Dead Space, but it struggled with La Noire. Skyrim on medium settings was playable.Battery life is excellent. It's been on for five hours now.Keyboards are a matter of personal taste. I prefer the old Thinkpad keyboards, but this island style is more attractive and has a nice feel. I can type around 80% as fast on this laptop as I can on my desktop.There isn't too much bloatware installed... Sony is better about this than most, but I removed the Office trial, Kapersky, and Windows "Essentials". It didn't make much difference in performance.The screen is small but gorgeous; the fit and finish is as good as any laptop I've ever had. I glanced at how to disassemble it and it plainly would be an enormous pain, like most laptops these days.There is no optical drive. No blu ray, no DVD, no CD. If you have access to a computer with such a drive, you can easily make isos and mount them for use on this computer, but I download everything these days. I think a laptop is better without the extra parts.I strongly advise replacing the hard drive in this laptop with an SSD. The boot times and program loading with this setup are incredibly fast. This makes a bigger difference to most users than a more powerful processor would.This is an outstanding laptop at a reasonable price. I paired it with Case Logic QNS-111 11.6-Inch EVA Molded Netbook Sleeve (Black), which fits the laptop well and provides a lot of protection.

Great value, performance and ASUS has a 2 year warranty!

The first laptop had dark spots in the corner of the display. Amazon next day shipped the replacement. Excellent customer support. This laptop runs great out of the box with only a small about of junk software. Mainly ASUS applications showing you some of the cool things you can do. Windows 7 so far has impressed me but be aware you will need to do a large amount of updates. (1 gig or better) The HDMI interface works great for connecting your HDTV to play dvd media and web content. Laptop runs cooler than expected but I still would recommend a good power cooler pad.This model does not have a blu-ray rom, only the K61IC-X1 does.This model you get a faster processor but no blu-ray.Thank you for the person that corrected me on this fact.

A great middle-ground choice!

I picked this out for our son who wanted something for gaming, with a larger screen than my wife's 15" work laptop but not as bulky as our family 17". He would have preferred a >$2000 gaming rig but given he's in the military, I didn't want to give anyone else itchy fingers, not to mention being in less than optimal conditions. He was doubtful when he received it but came around quickly once he found that it handled WoW easily. In fact, a friend "triple boxed" Wow (running three game concurrently) without any trouble! The keypad layout is much better than the configuration of our 17" and the boot-up time is short and sweet thanks to ASUS for keeping it clean and virtually free of bloatware (yes, I'm looking at you, HP!) All in all, we're very happy with the capabilities and price of this laptop and will be looking to ASUS for our future needs.

Dell XPS Meet Your Match

I bought a Dell XPS M1530 November 2008 and it was subsequently stolen November of 2009. In my quest to replace my laptop I was stubborn & hesitant at first to stray from Dell having owned 3 laptops previously from them with no issues and nothing but excellent experience. I went shopping at a local Electronics retailer and stumbled upon this machine which is lesser known in the Southern US, however I have now learned they are the 3rd largest seller of laptop computers in the world and have won numerous awards. This machine is FAST it boots up to start menu in a mere 8 seconds flat which is impressive. Although there are faster machines out there, for the price of this one it is well worth it for under $1000. The screen picture is crisp as no other and is LED HD and has one of the best resolutions out there, great for movies and other video media. The internal sound card combined with alltec lansing speakers provide for an excellent sound also for music, etc. ALthough not as fancy to the eye or as gimicky as a Dell XPS this is as compatible as it gets and at a better price. also interesting is the 1yr warranty that protects you even from accidental dropping of the machine. 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, etc.

Dell beats the MacBook Pro!

My son is off to his freshman year in college in Sept. I have been waiting for this product from Dell, a MBP killer for the MS Windows World. Similar size as 13" MBP but with a 14" screen. The best laptop processor, Intel 3rd Gen i7, with 8GB of main memory. A combined large hard drive and SSD drive for performance and quick boot times is a great touch. Like the NVIDEA separate graphics with another GB of graphics memory. And long battery life, key for college kids on the go. Thin & light. Purchased and external IOMEGA Super slim USB optical drive inexpensively, for when he really needs it--he can leave this in his room.I dont think you can beat this package, buy it for those that really need a MOBILE computer, yes, a real computer that runs local apps (Photoshop, MS Office) lightning fast! And with plenty of local storage--take all your files with you in one small package. No tablet (iPad, etc) can even be mentioned in the same breath as this machine. There is no comparison. Apple has been outdone, and I love my iPhone and my son is thrilled with his 2nd Gen iPad.I wish I had one of these, there is more than enough technology to last my son all 4 years of college!

The very good and the good

I am a front end web developer, which means, I guess, that I know enough about computing that I just expect things to work. But I'm also a Windows guy, so with that in mind, here's my review:VS MACBOOK PRO OVERVIEW:There's no question this is Dell's/Windows answer to the MacBook Pro. My wife owns the latest 13.3 in MBP and side by side these look and feel a LOT alike. The hardware specs on this Dell are superior, but my honest assessment is the performance is pretty similar.While I'm not crazy about the Lion interface, one thing I like about the MBP is that it's quiet, all the time. This Dell is VERY quiet by PC standards, silent most of the time, but if I'm doing a lot at once (videos, graphics, other heavy applications) I will hear the fan. Not bad at all, but noticeable.If you like the look and feel of the MBP but you're married to Windows, Google, etc, this is probably as good as it gets.DISPLAY:It's great. Very bright and crisp. The 1600x900 is better than you'll get on a comparably priced MBP and seeing them side by side, I'll take this one.KEYBOARD:Clearly built to be like the MBP. I don't need to look at a keyboard when I type - this one feels good, with a caveat: I feel like the keyboard is offset to the right just slightly. Maybe this is just me, but when I place my wrists on the deck, I can easily hit "r" when I mean to hit "t". It's taken me a few days to get used to this. Now that I have, the keyboard performance itself is really nice.TOUCHPAD/MOUSE:This is my least favorite thing. Again, maybe it's just me, but I felt like the mouse/cursor movement was slow out of the box. In Control Panel, I adjusted to as fast as possible, and I still think it's just fast enough. Taps and clicks on the touchpad are not as responsive as I would expect. Not terrible, but not great to me. That being said, I don't care for the touchpad on the MBP either, and this is a lot like that one, so maybe it's just me.PHYSICAL LOOK AND FEEL:Fantastic.BATTERY:On a full charge, my first battery run lasted just over six hours of moderate computing. That's pretty good, I think, but not fantastic. If it gets better, and I expect it will, I'll update.BOOT/WAKE TIME:I guess the SSD Dell built into this laptop helps. It's far quicker to respond than other Windows laptops. Don't expect it to be instantaneous though.OVERALL:Almost, but not quite, perfect. If you're a Windows/Google user who admires the MBP, this is it.UPDATE:First, the more I use this the more comfortable I become, particularly with the keyboard and touchpad.Second, while another reviewer has claimed this does not have a media card slot, all I can say is, mine does. It's located on the right side of the laptop, and is not immediately obvious because the cover is well-engineered and flush to the body.

XPS 14

Love it! I have had my XPS 14 for about a week now. I originally purchased the XPS 13, but ended up taking it back because I didn't want to spend $1500 on last year's technology. I debated on waiting for Dell to update the XPS 13, but then I decided to go ahead and make the purchase on the XPS 14. By purchasing the XPS 14 I was getting, over the XPS 13, the newest processor, higher resolution and better screen quality, 8 GB of memory, high end display adapter with 1gb of dedicated ram, SD card reader, full size HDMI port, and a built in Ethernet port. In addition to all that I saved $200 over the XPS 13. What you lose is a little size and the 256 GB SSD drive. The SSD is a big deal to me. What is the point of an ultrabook without a SSD? I noted that Amazon carried a Crucial 256 GB SSD designed for ultrabooks for $200. This puts the price equal to the XPS 13, with significantly better hardware on the XPS 14. When I got the XPS 14 I was amazed at how small it was for a 14 inch screen notebook. Replacing the hard drive with the SSD drive was easy. Since the XPS 14 comes with a 32gb SSD designed for caching, which I no longer needed since I was adding a SSD drive I got a bonus of an extra 32 GB of SSD drive space. With the added SSD the computer boots, shuts down, wakes, and sleeps almost instantly. If you are debating on this computer I highly recommend it.
